Intel QX9770 Retail

Just received a QX9770 Retail CPU and this is the first retail version that does not come with a cooler. You get processor only. I guess they figure you are going to use a better cooler than stock or h20 cool it which I am doing.

I thought Intel shipped their Extreme Edition CPUs with brand new *huge* HSF? I actually liked the look and wanted to get a hold of one.

I did too. You get the retail box, warranty booklet and sticker and that's it. I got this from New Egg and if you check their website, on the oem version it has no fan/heatsink and on the retail version it does't have "does not include fan/heatsink.

You didnt finish your question or assistance.

They dont put a sink with some packages because yes intel knows were not going to use it. Theres no need to pick out a 1500 dollar processor if your too cheap to buy a 50 dollar sink at the very least for it.

If your going to watercool, make sure you do a lot of research. Use my sticky linked at the bottom for a good start place, then move over to xtremesystems.org and ask a lot of questions.

Feel free to ask me questions too, you can ask the members in case and cooling, i have a great deal of paitence.

Also when you post h2o questions please use the case and cooling section and not the cpu and overclocking question. This section is for help in regards to overclocking, and cpu processors.

Anything that applies to cooling, or cases and modification projects belong in my section.

Yeah, but then you could also look at it as, "I just spent $1500 on this baby and Intel couldn't even include anything more than the manual and a sticker". They include the hsf with the other processors.
Here's an idea... How about a hood ornament for your computer instead. It could be the Core2 Extreme logo.

Anyhow back OT:

Op the first wave of QX9650's came sinkless. The second wave that comes in will have the new beefed up sink. But honestly if you paid 1500 dollars on a processor and your too cheap to shell out a TRUE, i can think of a lot of members on this forum that will seriously start crying on such a waste.

But who cares, no sink means no sink needed incase of rma, which means intel is telling you please cool this baby down properly!

Oh i dont know if the no overclocking rule applies to QX or X processors. Anyone know? Last time i heard there is none thats also another reason why the processor is so rediculously expensive.

If you kill it by voltage tho, thats a different story.

wow, so you're saying that any oc that an extreme edition cpu can get on stock vcore is "free" and under warranty? Or is it even ok to run it up the recommended max? That's a nice thing to file away for future reference...I'm still not sold on the QX cpus, but they're a little bit more interesting now at least...

But the last time i heard you were allowed to play with the unlocked multiplier.

I may very well go for one of these, and am very surprised to hear there's no stock cooler as I remember reviews indicating one (and was planning to go with that one). I will say I did find this:

I thought that when the QX6800 came out it was without a Heat sink. In fact I thought for a while it was only available to OEM builders because Intel though only they would make sure it got proper cooling.

Interesting - received my response from Intel:

Intel® is working hard to meet the current demand for the Intel® CoreT2 Extreme processor QX9770 with heatsink/fan. While Intel is unable to predict exactly when this availability issue will be fully resolved, every effort is being put forth to do so. We apologize for any inconvenience this issue has caused and we appreciate your patience.

So, it would appear there is a version with a fan, assuming the CSR knows what they're talking about.
