Intel questions

Just want to know how good are the graphics which come onboard intel chipsets? How to compare their performance? What I mean is how to compare them to standalone graphics cards? Currently I'm using GF4 MX 440 from inno3d. Are the onboard chips good enough for playing games like warcraft and very basic home video editing or running TV cards?

I'm thinking of getting core2 so would like to put the extra money on the higher core2 processor then a graphics card. And only upgrade the graphics card when the needs comes later on. I have been looking for comparisions on the net but can't find any.

And 2NDLY, do intel chipsets perform better then chipsets from others like VIA or Nvidia? My assumption now is intel chipsets are better as its the same people who make the processor. And should be more stable. Am I wrong to say this? Whats the general outlook when it comes to chipsets?Thanks

It's folly to compare onboard graphics chipsets to graphics cards because there really is no comparison. With the current trend, onboard will never come even close to a dedicated (modern) GPU. Even if you only get a budget $80 video card, I would go a notch down on your processor selection to get it. You will be much, much happier as soon as you try running any game made within the past 5 years. However, you will not notice any difference in video editing (this is all done on the CPU). Even if you didn't play any games whatsoever I would still recommend going out and buying the cheapest dedicated GPU you can find. If anything, you'll save yourself the RAM an onboard chip would otherwise hog for itself.

I'm not really a motherboard person, but I believe Intel chipsets have a slightly higher standard of quality...for a price, of course.

Thanks for the input Raloth. So dedicated graphics then. Wallet gonna get very light after this purchase

So Ati or Nvidia? Most go with Nvidia so I have followed the trend so far. Any change in trends recently?


Does anyne else have an openion on intel chipsets?

this X1300 128mb for $55 looks alright.

if you can manage spending $90, this 7600GS 256mb looks like a really good deal. you'll be able to do some gaming with it, too.

you might want to look into the 7300 cards as well

And sometimes Intel chipsets sacrifice performance and features for stability, so don't just assume Intel + Intel = best.

And that doesn't mean that non-intel chipsets aren't stable
