Intel Quad-Core QX6700 Questions

Hey folks,

Finally time to build a new system, and I'm playing with various configurations. One of the processors I'm considering (though it's so darned expensive) is the Intel Extreme Quad-Core QX6700. But I have a few questions about this one.

1.) I'm currently running a Pentium 4 2.6 GHz 400 MHz Bus Speed PC (Asus P4T-E i850 motherboard). It just seems frustrating that this new processor is also 2.6 GHz clock speed. I realize bus speed, cache, and of course the number of cores should make a significant difference, but is there any way I can get a real-world idea of the performance increase we're talking about between these two processors on both multi-cored and single-cored applications? This *IS* an upgrade in speed, right?

2.) When is, say, the QX6800 due out, or faster quad-core processors? Soon or not for a while?

3.) I don't typically overclock. Should the standard cooling option be sufficient (given a cool room, nicely designed case, but a lot of warm-running components like SLI video cards)?

Thanks all!

The QX6700 will be considerably faster than your current 2.6 ghz chip. The architecture that the c2d or c2q is built on is completely different than the crappy netburst architecture of the p4...

the c2q definitely has much better IPC (instructions per clock) than the p4 chips ever did...

you will notice a big difference even if you're not overclocking...

as for the QX6800.... not sure if they'll release one as the QX6700 is an unlocked chip so if you wanted all you'd ahve to do is change the mult from default 10x to 11x to get a higher overclock w/o touching anything else.

The Quad-Core QX6700 is about 500% faster then your Pentium 4 2.6Ghz 400FSB

My Athlon 64 X2 3800+ is about 200% faster in games

My friends AMD Sempron 64 socet 939 that he got for around $30 is about 100% faster in games then your P4 2.6Ghz 400FSB CPU

Your P4 CPU VS Core2 QX6700
------------------------------------------

Your P4
512k Cache
400Mhz FSB
2.6Ghz <-----------------------> the longer this line the slower & inefficient each 1Mhz is.

VS

Core2 QX6700
8MB's Cache
1066MHz FSB
2.66GHz X4 Core's <----> the longer this line the slower & inefficient each 1Mhz is.

Hope this helps you out.

If you want the best out right now?? Get the QX6700!

The best chip I've ever owned. (the most expensive also) (Thanks uncle Sam;))

Kick much ass and doesn't take any shiza:Q

Thanks for the great replies folks! Sounds like one really nice chip. So no QX6800 around the corner since it's so overclockable? Interesting. Well at any rate, from what you've said sounds like this would be an amazing performance upgrade for me. More comments of course always welcome. =o)

Thanks. Sorry, still playing with configurations and figuring out the rest of the system, so it'll be a bit before I take the plunge. I also will hafta get the funding together. Appreciate the heads up tho'!

If you want the best but at a good price i suggest buying a Core 2 E6600 1066FSB with a X8800GTS 320Mbs and 2Gb's of DDR2 800Mhz Ram

OR wait a little longer for a Core 2 E6650 with 1333FSB and 2Gb's of DDR3 1333Mhz Memory

With either a Nvidia X8800GTS 320Mb card .. or a ATI X2900XT 512Mb card
Prices will go down on the X8800GTS once ATI bring out what they have.

Thanks for the suggestion. Definitely looks like a great setup, but I'm really leaning towards quad-core... But you're right...that's definitely a huge price jump at the same time.
