according to the developer's newsletter, the video converter provided in their Christmas giveaway is the latest version they just released on Dec 10, 2015. Compared with the version I posted previously, the latest version has some functional improvement. I searched on their official website and found the following info FYI:

What's new in MacX Video Converter Pro V5.9.1 built on 2015/12/10:
1.
New profiles for the latest mobile devices, including iPhone 6s/Plus, iPad Pro, iPad Air 2/Mini 4, The new Apple TV, Samsung Galaxy S6/Note 5, etc.
2. Support Intel Quick Sync Video hardware acceleration tech to dramatically accelerate conversion speed up to 16X faster than before.
3. Refreshed interface with Intel QSV enabling option accessible.

I tested it myself on my MBP with Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11.2 (4.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i7) to convert a M2TS (AVC) video (2.23h, 7.5GB, 1920X1080) to MP4 format. It only takes about 5 min to finish the process, much faster than before.

What makes this better than something like HandBrake?

Yup, Handbrake really does a good job in video conversion and it is famous with many people. I often used it to finish the converting tasks. when it comes to the difference between Handbrake and MacX Video Converter Pro, according to my experience, besides converting video, the macx program can do some other things while handbrake cannot, such as capture screen, download video from online video sites, and turn photos into video slideshow.

Besides, Handbrake (for Windows) may support Intel Quick Sync Video tech, but it seems that its Mac version does not have the feature.

Anyway, I keep Handbrake and MacX Video Converter in my software arsenal for video conversion, downloading and recording.

Thanks.

I did some brief digging on the QSV thing, and what little I read suggested it was better for on the fly decoding, but not so much converting one file to something else. It essentially aids a lesser powered device for quicker/efficient encoding. I did try the software out on a file, but my preferred destination file is an MKV, so I likely won't use this that much. And someone that had compared the use of QSV vs without in Handbrake suggested that the quality results favored non-QSV, which I would more or less expect as more efficient usually means cutting corners on something.

@mvbighead,
you really did a careful comparison. just like the old saying: gains will lose. The speed is improved while the output quality is degraded :( If you care the quality much more, then stick with your first choice.

Just installed the PC version. Same annoying design that they insist on these "converter" software.

Be nice to find a program that looked more conventional.
