To use a car analogy, it’s like if a tire manufacturer makes a tire with a speed rating of 120 mph (195 kmph for my metric friends) but let car manufacturers use it as the stock tire in vehicles that are capable of speeds in excess of said speed. Meanwhile, poor Germans on the Autobahn think they’re all fine and dandy hauling butt in the left lane only to have a tire explosively deflate on the freeway and the tire manufacturer defends themselves by saying the tire is running within spec as long as the car manufacturer says its in spec.

Gotta love how the "intel baseline" isn't the same across motherboard vendors. Almost like the intel baseline isn't provided by intel but cooked up by each vendor on their own.Also it's worth noting that SVID set to intel fail safe runs more Vcore than the ASUS default settings for any scenario that doesn't hit the power limit. Gigabyte's intel baseline profile does the same. Most gigabyte boards use AC_LL and DC_LL of less than 1.1mOhms on default but with the baseline profile the AC and DC_LL get set to 1.7mOhm which raise the core voltage for any workload that doesn't hit power limits.

It's incredible how they can screw up something as simple as this. I sure hope that in the future all motherboards are required to use baseline profile out of the box. It should be the same across all vendors. If board is e-waste quality, then I understand why the limits would be lower than official spec for high end parts.

It wasn't a big deal when you could overclock the you know what out of them but that's no longer possible.

Good video Steve. I do wish you had stressed the potential danger of setting these profiles though given they increase ACLL so much and hence core voltage. Setting SVID Behavior to Intel Failsafe on my 14900ks results in a voltage in bios of 1.63v!!! Looks like you ended up at 1.48v for your 14900k.

Believe it or not, the baseline profile should NOT be the same on every board, because it should include calibrated results for AC DC load line. The whole idea of this feature is to get lower CPU VIDs on high end boards with more robust power delivery.

I'm getting increasingly amused by this situation, because Intel and the mobo makers are essentially punishing their premium customers.

How close are these CPUs getting to power limits before the vcore backs off from an elevated state due to AC_LL/DC_LL settings? At relatively low current levels (e.g. low utilization, low power), modern CPUs should not be troubled much by abnormally-high voltage.

And plenty of damage control in the comments especially from that "TPU proofreader" who seems to like making excuses for companies.

I think some of the review sites are doing a wait and see approach coz there's no telling how many BIOS updates may get released before the issue is settled as resolved.

It's also very telling that this issue came to the forefront after the release of RPL-R. Either they needed new settings for these souped up CPUs and Intel failed to convey that bit of information or Intel decided to do some lite validation to get these CPUs out the door sooner and the mobo vendors, not knowing any better, saw no harm in pumping this new silicon revision with the same current and voltage as ADL and RPL.

Either way, it is Intel's responsibility to test the limits of their CPUs and inform their partners accordingly. Pat was too busy looking at AMD in the rearview mirror again!

TPU has an...odd...attitude to certain notoriously bad products. I remember when the 4060 Ti came out and got the Highly Recommended sticker, there was a large revolt in the forums and they took it out, but the article still has the stigmata.

There is being afraid of being put on blacklist by a mega corporations PR department, and there is being a toady.

Besides, TPU are too big so blacklisting TPU would backfire.

AMD CPUs aren't really burning themselves out though. They briefly had a completely unnecessary stint where Zen4 was overvolting vSoC to keep EXPO kits stable (it wasn't necessary at all, and that was hammered out pretty quickly. 230W PPT isn't hurting any Zen4.

That s still too much, power should be around the 7950X3D value, or at worst like a 142W PPT 5950X, guess that it s what was planned before they changed their plans

In the HWUB video, ASUS was clearly by far the biggest power eater. Why is Gigabyte so panned? Aren't they a secondary problem?

Start around minute 12 to see the cpu voltage during cinebench runs after running the new baseline settings on the mobo. From 1.3v to 1.6v.
