Intel prices never dropped much in last 6 months!

Out of curiosity I checked real time price charts for Intel E6xxx series and found that their price for the past 6 months hasn't dropped at all since 6 months ago. The demand on C2Ds has been so high they can afford not to alter price for 6 months. That means they are making quite a bit of good money comparing to AMD where the prices for X2 line just constantly bled for the past 6 months. That certainly can't be good for AMD. I can't imagine what the price of X2s will become 4/22.

Intel usually drops its prices when it introduces new parts, the Dual-core lineup is pretty much unchanged since mid-2006 so there haven't been any new parts to take the top pricing slots. This will change as more Kentsfield parts reach the market, as these will take the top pricing slots.

I might consider going with an X2 for my 939 system instead of waiting for a full rebuild if they get cheap enough. I would definitely go with a C2D after the price drops if there was a nice cheap P965 board out there (I am on an EXTREMELY tight budget)

The processors right now are dirt cheap for what they offer. The only problem I see are the 200 dollar motherboards and 200 dollar RAM that actually make the CPU run.

what amazes me is how a decent polo shirt costs more these days than a complex piece of hardware like a computer chip

I just read that and felt instantly better about my desire to spend $2,100CDN on a new machine without a display in the next few weeks, hehe. Especially thinking about female friends going out and buying $600+ handbags and being bored with them after a few months.

I highly doubt that we'll ever have to worry about computer hardware becoming as chic and sexy to the point of carrying the price premium of many high fashion apparel and accessories.

.. and that's a good thing. :)

I saw an advertisement for an Asus (I think) laptop with the case encrusted in Swarovski crystals the other day. it's pretty stupid, I think. but someone must be buying I guess.

I suppose part of the appeal of apple products is the sleek minimalist design, I guess people are paying a small price premium for the apple design aesthetic when they buy an apple computer.

Apple? :p
And there are designer laptops already. But, like $600 handbags, they are the minority.

I was just about to ask if zsdersw if he has ever seen an iPod before. All kidding aside, the value we derive from our computer's is a fabulous thing, especially when you look at how much computing power you get for your dollar relatively speaking.

I personally will be upgrading to quad-core (or 4-core and seven years ago, whatever you wanna call it) sometime by the end of the year. I am eager to multitask the way I used to with dual-processors without any lag (single processor right now).

Viva the multicore !
