Intel price cuts upcoming?

I've heard that intel has a price cut coming up in April. If this is true, how long before AMD follows suit to compete? I am looking to buy either an opteron 170 or 4400+ soon and wouldn't mind waiting until the price cuts to save some money.

Anyone know more about this?

recently Fry's/Outpost had an 805/ECS (ATi chipset) mobo Combo for $150. If it drops to $100, i'm definitely getting this...

lol, a PD AND a motherboard for 100 bucks? I think you're asking for too much ^^

haha, here's to hoping!

i didn't expect the P-D 805 combo for $150 either... realistically, maybe it'll drop to $120-$130????

It's hard to say whether or not AMD will cut any prices before they roll out AM2. Rumor has it that AMD will raise prices on s939 chips at the AM2 launch to promote adoption of AM2 parts.

That would NOT be cool. When is AM2 set to come out?

Pentium and Conroe pricing.

In short don't buy and intel CPU until at least the end of April.

I don't want an intel. I want an AMD. Hoping that this drives AMD to cut their prices as well to keep competing. :)

I love competition!

From what I have read so far, AMD's transition from socket 939 to AM2 shows minimal performance boost. Of course, it's still early.

Conroe, however, is a new core, which looks very promising with huge performance boost over current cores. I have an AMD X2 4400+ at the moment, but it looks like I may have to switch to Intel.

Unlike you, I can careless whether I buy an AMD or an Intel, I just want superior product. Unfortunately for AMD, Intel has A LOT of cash to burn (check out their balance sheet), so they can price much more aggressive.

If you are waiting for AM2, you might as well wait for Conroe. At $241, 2.13ghz Conroe will blow the cheapest (probably $290) AM2 dual-core processor. Once overclocking is taking into account, I wouldn't even want to imagine a 90nm AMD vs. 65nm conroe.

When is Conroe set to debut? I was thinking about buying an opteron 170 or 4400 X2...I don't want to wait 6-8 months for the conroe. Even then, will the $290 Conroe compete with the 4400+ X2 or opteron chips?

conroe supposedly was quoted to come out "as easly as possible in q3". q3 starts in july , so yeah..

theres ES chips starting to go around now and no one has said anything bad about their performance etc, so well honestly it could only get better.

the 965 chipsets are coming out in june/july so should be just after that. amd is supposedly raising x2 prices by like 2-5$ . they do have better cpus right now and are selling all they can make so i figure they dont care if intel starts selling more cpus for less, since they are selling all they can make anyway.

So basically, If I am going to get an opteron or x2 dual core, it wouldn't be beneficial to wait any long to purchase the chip?

I would say yesy Conroe Seems to win at lower clock speeds so 2.13 ghz should be better 2.4-2.6 x2

If you are not willing to wait till july then yes. But...

Conroe and AM-2 suport DDR2. So say you buy 2 gigs of DDR1, you wont be able to reuse it. Buy 2 gigs of DDR2 and it'll last you 2 years. Plus both of those sockets are forward looking. Intel's might even support quad-core cpus. S939 is end of the line. Of course there are other problems such as motherboard bugs, etc. But a 2.66ghz conroe outperforms FX-60 at 2.8ghz by 20-30%!

So imagine getting a 2.13 or 2.40ghz conroe and overclocking it.

AM-2 - barely any performance increase over S939
2.66 Conroe tears X2 @ 2.8ghz
Conroe is also going to scale to 1333FSB and 3.33ghz by Q1 2007.

So perhaps waiting 3 months will save you $ in the long run. But if you have a very old system and it bugs you, get A64. It's a great performer. I'd go with Opteron 165 then since it's cheaper than opteron 170.
