Im trying to decide if it is worth it to go for a Q6600 as I currently have a E6600. Im wondering if there will be a price drop and possibly a better chip for the same price as these are now. So what say ye? Wait for it?

Wait for it, especially if you've got a e6600 allready. Unless you do some hardcore video encoding and such that makes uses of 4 cores, it's not worth it ...

last I saw there will be a penryn version of the q6600 at something similar to q6600 prices (but it might not be out till 08).

i doubt there will be a price drop, but I imagine that you'd be best served by waiting for penryn. I've heard the q6600s are pretty limited in their overclocking potential (many top out around 3GHz) simply due to too much heat generated by 4 65nm cores. at 45nm, I'd imagine that heat would be less of an issue.

Also, possibly more importantly, penryn will support larger caches and SSE4, both of which will really help with video encoding, which is one of the few applications capable of fully using all 4 cores.

The only issue with the Penryn quad in that range is that it will be 1333FSB and have a fairly low multiplier.

Last time I checked, the only quad-core Penryn (Yorkfield) planned for this year is the QX6950 (3.33GHz, Extreme Edition) that will retail in the $1000+category and the mainstream CPUs will be launched in Q1 2008.

I don't expect the Wolfdale/Yorkfield CPUs to cost any more than current the Conroe/Kentsfields because they will be launching at equivalent speeds and the improvements (die-shrink and SSE4) don't really justify any serious price increase. Plus AMD's upcoming Phenom processors should keep pricing very aggressive.

When the Preslers came out to replace the Smithfields, they weren't priced significantly higher, were they? This is a lot similar - except for far less suck.

No issue if your mobo can do 450+ FSb and you can keep the temps controlled.

yeah, i mean we already know the e6x50's oc well and they all have the 1333 fsb, by the time the penryn quads are out i doubt that will be an issue. and if it is for you, then you're dumb for not buying a better motherboard at that time, considering that you would have shelled out the $ for a penryn quad.
