Intel p4 vs amd opteron 148

I recently bought a opteron 148 and looking at it in task manager, it hold half as many threads as my p4 can handle does than necisarily mean anything?
 
Doesn't affect it all that much. Opty will take down the P4 regardless, unless that P4 is 3.6 or more..
 
Well first your gonna have to be a little more specific, I have no idea what you mean by "hold half as many threads". What part of task manager are you looking at?? And you are gonna have to be more specific than P4, because thats anywhere from an old williamette 1.4ghz to a prescott 3.8ghz.

I have an FX51 which is in effect an Opteron 148 (Socket 940) It is about as fast (At stock speeds) in most tasks as a P4 in the 3.3-3.5 range I've found, and somewhere close to equivilent to the 3.2EE Northwood CPU.

destory it OC like that..

Basically A64 1MB chips you can calculate pentium eq speed with a 1.57 multiplier.

2800 x 1.57 = 4396Mhz

Hell why don't you go look at some FX-57 reviews? it's the same thing.
 
its a prescott 3.0 vs an opty 148

i meant that it holds twice as many threads almost and has been a little problematic since i started the build
 
He's talking about hyperthreading... holding twice as many threads in task manager like being able to see two cpu usages though it's only one.

Hyperthreading is ******, don't worry about it.
 
im glad someone knew what i was talking about! but yea in the task manager how there are 2 cpu usages, i just dont understand i even wikipedia'd it and still was confused
 
It shows 2 cpus, but your 148 can process just as many threads, and faster than your old P4.
 
thats what i figured, i want to go dual core in the future and was hoping to get a 165 but they are soon pulling off the market or so i have heard. 🙁 so my next choice would be one of the X2 heard they are buggy though....oh well
 
x2's aren't buggy...the QC on the X2 series is not as tightly controlled as the opterons so there is the possibility of a wide amount of variance within the same core/stepping/week.

The "bugs" is the X2 are simply problem with SOME game software that doesn;t work correctly with windows code IF you don't use the X2 driver. The same "bug" would occur with an Opteron 165 or an X2 3800.

Bottom line, there are no problems with the X2's.
 
if you already have an Opteron, what would be the point in going to a P4 unless you already had a P4 mobo? Both will handle information very well, but most AMD chips require less GHz in accord with the P4 which has more GHz, in turn you're looking at heat problems and which processor can handle more? you tell me.

Don't forget those same "bugs" occur on the Pentium-D, and even the microsoft hotfix didn't correct all my pentium-d glitches.

Just when I thought the K62 "buggey" rumours were dying down, now there is a whole new one. AMD should just try to stay away from the suffix 2 it must be bad luck for them. 😛

Anyhow, as mentioned above, this was/is a software issue relating to dual cores. That means it affects dual-core pentiums as well, because they run the same software as X2's. Also it is a pretty easy fix for even someone with low knowledge of software.
Now, the K62 problem was a combo of hardware software, but it was actually the chipsets. The CPUs themselves were very stable. (I ran a K62-450 for several years without any problems whatsoever.)

Intel runs hotter, and takes more electricity to run, thats fact ATM. The AMD chips own every category, except mobile and there they are agueably tied or a little behind, yet less exspensive.
