I am trying to get an Intel P4 2.8ghz processor to run on an ASUS P4G8X motherboard (yes, I know that both of them are relatively old). But both worked fine under the previous configuration that I had them in.

I previously had a P4 2.53 processor running on the P4G8X. Worked fine. I have also switched cases from that previous configuration.

But now that I have placed the 2.8 in it, I only get a momentary running of the CPU fan and other fans when I turn on the power and then it immediately shuts off/will not boot.

I have tried another know good power supply of 365 Watt rating and I still get the same problem.

Yes, the BIOS on the M/B is at the latest version available.

Could it be that the 2.8 will just not run on the P4G8X, even though the ASUS website says that it should ?

Or is it possible that I am having a short somewhere and possibly need to try remounting the M/B ?

Yes, I have checked the power switch jumpers and from what I can see from the M/B manual they are properly installed on the pins.

Any other thoughts on something that I might be missing ?

Thanks.

The 2.53ghz P4 will have a 533mhz FSB and the 2.8ghz will have an 800mhz FSB, its likely the mobo dosent support 800mhz fsb or you must jump through hoops to get an 800mhz fsb cpu to work.

It should have a five-digit "S-spec" lasered into the CPU heatspreader. Look that up on processorfinder.intel.com. Then it should tell you.

I am not sure.

Will prescott or northwood be stamped on top of processor ?

If not, how else can I tell ?

Thanks.

The letters are pretty small and only be seen if you cleaned up the heatspreader with isopropyl alcohol or some other suitable cleaning agent. For a P4 2.8C 800FSB Northwood, they will be in the format of:

Core clock / FSB / L2 Cache Size
2800 ------ 800 -----512K

The same format applies to prescott but the L2 cache size will be 1M instead.
