Yes, you can overclock it. Do you know which 2.4 you have?

IIRC, the 2.4 came in 400 533 and 800fsb Northwood cores, with the 800fsb part supporitng hyperthreading, it also came in a 533fsb Prescott core without hyperthreading.

The potential of the chip, and the best way to go about overclocking it wil depend somewhat on which model you have, especially WRT what you need to do about RAM speed when you OC.

1st we need to know what youre trying to do, if youre playing games, its likely your video card or amount of memory or both holding you back, much moreso than your cpu.

Definatly need a lot more info. Like already mentioned, there are 4 differant 2.4ghz P4's, need to know which one. What motherboard, what type of ram, what speed of ram, 1 512mb stick, 2x256mb sticks? 4x128mb sticks??? What power supply, what video card, what are you using the machine for..what cooling?

WOW !!

are there so many issues involved ????

Never knew all this when I bought the System !!

Help me gyuz to find answer to all these Questions and the Speed issues ALSO,.

I dont think Spywarez are an issue as suggested as I have aapersonaPRO installed and NOD32 on my machine.

Memory is 1 Nos. Stick 512 MB Ram

Mother Board is P4I45Gx_PE

BIOS is AMI SMBIOS Ver3.0 (minor Ver2.3) Release date 6/1/2004

What I cud find out from Win XP Manager about CPU I am posting if it will be of any help.

Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.40GHz
x86 Family 15 Model 3 Stepping 3
Version: Model 3 Stepping 3
Processor Id: BFEBFBFF58050F33
Max Clock Speed: 2392 MHz
Current Clock Speed:2392 MHz
Ext Clock: 133 MHz
L2 Cache Speed: Unknown MHz
Address Width:32 Bits
Socket Design:FC-478

If there is any Utility with which I can find Any more info PLease tell me !!

Also I dont use my Computer for Gaming but for Designing purposes.

PLEASE HELP

thanx

I'll give you the good news first. Presscotts can overclock very well.

Heres the bad news: you need to overclock a comparable presscott much more than a northwood to recieve the same performance. A 2.6ghz presscott is about the same speed asa 2.4ghz northwood.

lol

first, is you pc a name brand pc from say hp/dell/compaq/gateway/etc.
or is it from a smaller company that custom made it?
if ti's from a big brand, it;s bios is locked and yes, you can buy a new unlocked bios but that voids the warranty and costs something like $80.

if it's custom made, go to bios, go to fsb(front side bus) speed, tune down memory divider to 3:2 or 5:4 and add 10mhz to the fsb and rebott into windows. run prime95 or somnething to work it for a few hours to make sure it's stable, go back into bios and move fsb up a bit more. when your comp is no longer stable, go into biso and decrease the htt(hyper transport) multiplier or memory divider to a lower step like 2:1 until it runs stable again. then repeat until yyou reach the max speed where 10more mhz wont run stable no matter what.

you might want a new cpu cooler too btw. the zalman v7700 alcu or pure cu is good.

Minor issue, Pentium 4s do not have HTT ;)

Also !!

I rebooted and went to bios selection...
It does not have any FSB selection but it has something wherein I can select Processor Frequency... Manually and increase from 133 onwards !!!

that's pretty much fsb/ it
s 133x4 for ht bus or whatever it's called on a intel. so if you say, got it up to 166mhz, your system bus would be 4x166 and your cpu would run at 2988mhz.

Thanx again!!

I increased the Frequency to 166 MHz and RAM Speed t0 166Mhz and Now my CPUz is showing CPU Speed as 3.0 Ghz !!!

Will there be any problem with this ????

Thanx for the Instructions

Well you've got it OC'd. Now I would run memtest, to make sure the memory is stable. And then run prime95 small FTT torture test, to make sure the cpu is stable(which it should be, you obviously were able to boot in to windows).

It looks like you are using onboard video. If so, buying a video card will speed your gaming up quite a bit.

Hi guyz !!

A wierd Problem !!

As i had told you all that I have overclocked my CPU but now I find that I have to change BIOS settings everytime I boot else I returns back to 2.4 Ghz speed ?????

Why is it so ??/

I save the setting on exit and machine boots fine and I can see processor running at 3.0 Ghz even with Intel CPU Util.

But when I swicth on the machine NEXT day the BIOS is back to original setting and CPU is at 2.4 Ghz ???

Any suggestions

Thats a bit odd, perhaps your CMOS battery is about dead, that would cause it to lose it's settings.

Well. Simple. Dont ever turn it off again..................

It probably means something is not stable. So the system is defaulting back to stock.
