Intel or AMD for new computer in July '01?

Hello all,

I need to decide (not right now, but get a good idea) on which brand processor to buy for the computer I will build for college later in July. I have already determined to go with an IDE RAID (4 20 or 30 gig hard drives on a 3ware Escalade controller) setup, with a Adaptec 2940U2W controlling running two 9 gig and one 36 gig SCSI. However, I don't know which Processor to purchase. I need TONS of power, the fastest from either brand at the time of July. But I've some bad things about the new Pentium 4s and AMD compatibility and stability with video editing (which is what this computer will be primarily used for). Any suggestion on what processor (and motherboard chipset) would suffice? Thanks in advance.

It's hard to recommend a motherboard for July right now considering the status of DDR is not entirely clear. No one is certain which DDR motherboard will be best, which is what you would want if you decide to go AMD.

As for the processor, I personally would go with AMD. Unless things change drastically AMD will continue to be a better choice then Intel in terms of price for power.

Judgement is right about the board. I also think AMD will likely be the choice in July. It all depends on how hard Intel pushes programmers to support the totally different P4 with optimizations. I myself will most likely be considering the P4 in a while. Right now, AMD wins hands down but you never know about the future.
