Ummmm... no offense, but it would be pretty dumb to deinterlace a non-interlaced movie :D

heh,i setup gordian and i tend to never touh the settings otherwise i will sometimes forget a setting and have to spend the time REencoding all over again which would waste even more of my time.

Oh by the way... I just tried xvid... I hate it, lol. I'm almost positive I have the newest codec, and it started encoding Old School at about 25-30 frames per second... so I aborted and took a look at what it had finished, and all it was encoding at that speed was the black frames before the movie starts, and the projected file size was 112 GB... the 8 seconds of video I let it encode was about 63 MB... that's total crap =) Something wasn't working right... now I'm encoding the same movie with all the same settings using divx and getting 40 frames per second (a lot lower than the 65 I stated because it's deinterlacing and I made it remove some noise) I'm not going to let it finish cause I don't want to encode this movie, just used it to try out xvid... and I think I'll be sticking with divx :D

xvid really is a much better codec. something must not have been right....but not meaning to hijack this thread here.

I would say go with the Intel for what you're doing. I love my A64, but I use it mostly for gaming and moderate video editing/encoding so for me it's perfect. A p4 2.8C with a decent 865 board shouldn't run you more than $250 or so. Then whatever is left in your budget spend on lots and lots of ram.:D

(And the gavel drops with this most excellent post.)

I can read between the lines in the original post, and my opinion is that

1.) Amd and Intel suck equally

2.) Intel and Amd suck equally

3.) Economically, there is no other choice

4.) Pick one and be happy or start a new thread

on the art of starting flame war's.
