This Saturday, Intel is hosting an Open House at Ronler Acres from 10am-1pm. It's a pretty cool experience with a lot of things to do, including a rare chance to look inside the fabs where future technology's chips are manufactured.

That's only about 10 miles from me, but that's my birthday and I don't necessarily want to spend it touring an Intel fab. Seems like it would be interesting though.

Dammit, and I'm flying out of Hillsboro tonight. I wouldn't mind taking a tour of the fab. (expecially since I live across the street from RA)

Which Fab are they opening up for tours?
D1D for sure, and I think D1C also. But "opening up" is not really an accurate description... It's not like they are going to open the doors and let you wander around inside. ;)

This is a cool event if you live in the local area. I haven't been to one in quite a few years - but back then they had a room where kids could make cookie wafers, play some xbox games, win some pretty good door prizes, etc.

With that said - if you think cool is looking through windows at large metal boxes without actually seeing what they do up close - then by all means it's COOL! :) [I jest as I support tools in fab that we sell to Intel].

BTW - that video linked in the OP's post is nowhere NEAR what it's actually like in the fab - except maybe at 2am or on a Sunday afternoon ;)

This is definitely a good video to watch if you're curious how fabs are built and what typically happens on a daily basis:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PecKlm6VutU&feature=relmfu

3:20 - 3:29 - looks like they are going to lunch and they show what the gownroom is like [you wear hoods, "suits", booties, gloves, and goggles].

5:55 - 6:43 is what typically happens in the fab on a daily basis [they don't show tool moves and the sheer # of construction workers walking around]. The inside of the fab is constantly changing - tools being moved around, FSE's [Field Service Engineers] repairing/upgrading tools/bringing in parts, etc.

ive been to that intel office before, at a previous job. didnt really see much other than rows and rows of cubes office space style

its a pretty large building, but the interesting thing they told me there was back in the 80s they actually manufactured motherboards there! the heyday of american electronics manufacturing.

i think now it is mostly a design center, i know the AMT vPro team is over there.

I use to work at D1D, pretty cool FAB to check out. Though most "tourists" seem to be more fascinated by the AMHS system then anything else.
