God I love competition. I hope it keeps going back and forth for who owns the performance crown. :) Next up hammer.

Anycase who is buying a P4 system?

I just got a 1.6A 'bout 2 weeks ago. Very happy with it. Have it running at 150fsb (2.4ghz). Haven't tried pushing it much more, waiting on some new ram. Major thanks to John for his help on it.

I was running an XP1800 at 145fsb before I changed. No huge performance improvement, but it's noticiable. About 700 more 3dmarks with everything set the same. It's just the fun of building and tinkering that makes it worth it :)

I think that Intel may be in favour of OCers, but by far not every user is an OCer. Of course, it's nice to get the 1.6A chip and send it to 2.4GHz, but it requires an expensive OC type mobo, and you just have to know what you're doing.

For non-OCers, the Athlon is still the king of value, incredible value. If you don't OC, you will get much more performance per dollar with Athlon than with the P4. And if when OCing the system becomes unstable, the user reverts back to default speed (or close), where Athlon is the king!

<< way overpriced for me >>

P4 1.6A retail HS/Fan ~ $130
EPOX 4BDA ~ $100
512 Meg Samsung DDR ~ $135

Total ~ $365. Overclocked to 2.4 GHz, DDR400 nice and stable. I don't think that is such a bad deal.

Well, now Intel has 3 speed grades out that are faster than anything AMD has to offer. Processors like the 2.4A will drop in price, and that is when Intel really started to win most benchmarks. I think the 2.2 and the 2100 split... so pretty even.

IMO, AMD is hurting now... if they ever want to become profitable, they need to compete in performance. Something that is slowly but surely going over to Intel's side. The enthusiast market which they do very well in is shifting over to the 1.6A OC craze.

Until Intel comes up with an affordable dual processor solution with as many whistles and bells I can get with AMD, I will have to stick with my AMD setup. I would LOVE to be able to run a COOL and QUIET dually setup with the performance I get now.

Wolfsraider..

Everyone's budget is different. No need to explain your situtation. You buy what you want to buy and that is all there is to it.

People who keep saying P4 is too expensive hasn't really LOOKED at the intel solution at all. Just like people who keep saying RDRAM is sooooo much more expensive.

So just ignore them and enjoy what you bought.

I was planning to buy an Athlon XP based system but after seeing what bang for the buck those 1.6a's are.... I can't convince myself not to buy Intel. Hey, it's quiet too... no nead to run those loud fans to keep it cool (major plus for me).
Performance wise at the same price when not overclocked, AMD is winning, no doubt about that. But when you can get 50% more of that CPU, nothing even comes close in terms of price/performance.

Just my 29 cents that I still have left in my bank account !
