HI

I need to upgrade my machine badly. This machine is used for my business no games or overclocking. Need something STABLE and RElIABLE. Should I spend the money now on a Intel machine or do u guys think AMD64 will be worth the wait. Anybody have any Ideal what the first amd64s will cost?

thanks

the first amds will cost about the same as the intel cpus but the mobos will be around 250. I myself am currently in the same position as you and i refuse to buy whats out now. im waiting. Make sure you get the fx model though.

I was contemplating the same thing a few months ago, but I decided I'm gonna get a P4 3.0c in 3 weeks afterall.

Quite frankly, I wouldn't put my chips on a brand new technological leap such as 32-bit to 64-bit right when it comes out. There's bound to be some major kinks, flaws, and obstacles they're gonna have to iron out before it becomes a rather "safe" purchase.

Also, it may be a few years until hardware / software manufacturers are up to speed on 64-bit compliance.

I'd wait a few years until thing pan out before investing in 64-bit, just to be on the safe side. Keep an eye on the trends and see how things go first.

Just my 0.02 cents.

the 64-bit chips from AMD will run your current 32-bit software just fine. the currently available Opteron chips are already doing so.

Neither of the chips sound very exciting to me right now honestly... I'm sure it will improve though. The second/third generation chips (athlon xp's, thunderbirds, northwoods) are the ones really worth hitting.

the athlon 64 will be "THE" processor to have when it comes out, if you have the money you would be buying an athlon 64, because it is the fastest, and it will out perform presscott. the 64 bit difference is huge, it could have over 10GB of ram, adn in 64 bit mode, would crunch numbers better then a 7ghz p4. right now, the opteron 1.8ghz is just a tad faster then a p4 3.2ghz in majority of the tests, and this is in 32 bit mode, on a processor not made for these kinds of apllications, in fact, the opteron is made to be run in a multi processor environment, and by itself, out runs a p4 3.2ghz, at only 1.8ghz. Now here comes the athlon 64. The processor with all the hype. it will fulfill this hype. This is because the athlon 64 is a single processor, meaning it can get it's full power out by itself. The athlon 64 will also be optimised to run desktop applications and games, unlike the opteron, and if an unoptimised processor is this fast. think of how fast the athlon 64 will be, not to mention it also, has 64 bit, and will be running at higher clock frequencies. for this and many other reasons, i suggest you wait untill the Athlon 64 comes out.

I recommend you don't buy anything yet... if you need it badly, that means you probably have a 2-3 year old computer, minimum... so what's another couple months? Wait and see what they have to offer, then make a more informed decision once you can SEE how well Intel and AMD's offerings perform. Same goes for video cards... brand new cores coming in the next 4-6 months from both ATI and nVidia.

What kind of applications do you need to run for your business machine? If it's just standard Office suites and such, pretty much any current Intel or AMD machines will run those fine. Dell has some nice deals on Intel rigs if you're not into building yourself.

If this machine is going to help your business productivity, why wait? Does your business app need 64 bit computing?

Why wait? Because when AMD and Intel are trying to flood the market with their new processors, the prices on the old processors drop like rocks because they're outdated and stores want to make shelf space for the new products.

^ Really! Just get a cost effective solution to get you through now, like the current Fry's dealie of AMD processor and ECS mobo for ~$100 w/hsf. That will get you computing at a reasonable level until the new chips are available, and you'll have much more information to base a decision on.

Don't know where you get the info on Athlon 64 being optimized for games. There only is ONE processor design, the K8. The rest is really packaging. The 'basic' A64 is Opteron with single channel memory controller and 1 hypertansport link. A64 FX is again Opteron with dual channel memory controller and 1 hypertransport link. Opteron has 3 hypertansport links.

BUnch of crap and a whole lot of ASS-umming....To think the prescott is going to beat by the athlon64 is a tough stretch. Early athlon64 will be 2.2ghz likley and have a 3400+pr rating, and the way amd is going with the pr rating I say get ready to be disappointed....Read reviews of athlon64's prereviews and opteron chips at 2.0ghz and remember that the opteron will have a dual channel memory controller and the amd64 will only have a single in the first release...Also remember there will be no real 64 bit OS out form windows and much optimization for the a64 out of the gate.....

What revews do you read AMDzone.com??? LOL what a a pile of FUD...I have seen many non biased amd reviews that show it the other way with the 1.8ghz opteron....Nice try though....

get ready to wait longer...Cmon ppl with this misinformation crap!!! tHE FX MODEL WILL NOT BE THE FIORST RELEASED and likely will happen after the socket change so beware of that.

If you want get the opteron now as though it may be only in a 2ghz speed it has the dual channel memroy controller and the boards have been out a bit longer. BUt have no misconceptions this is not the end all performance that AMD marketing BS has hyped to us for years. 64bit enhancvement likely will not be realized for a bit and the average person and business doesn;t need this marketing scam in the desktop or even just the workstation platform....
