Hey guys. i know the 1.6a is a general overclocking beast, ive figured that much out. However, if a store doesnt mention A in the name, is there any way to know if that is what you are getting? is a 1.6 a regular p4, and a 1.6a a northwood?

thanks
-Sam

1.6a has 512K cache, which is common to all northwood based p4s. the 1.6 is the old willamette core, and has 256K cache.

I personally wouldn't trust a listing of 1.6 as being a Northwood. You also have to be wary of the pincount, as I believe both the Willamette and Northwood cores are available for the 478 socket.

edit- minor grammar fix

If you are planning to buy a Pentium 4 right now, then there is no reason not to get a Northwood. They have a die reduction and 512k cache, and they have a very small price increase over the Willamette variety.
