I am looking to build a new pc with a p4 3.0E Ghz 800FSB, 1MB l2 cache proc. PC3200 512 Kingston value ram, Radeon 9800Pro AGP.

I need to select a motherboard which offers reliability, stability and flexibility for upgradation.

The two selections I have in mind are Intel 865Perl and Asus P4P800E Deluxe.

I am told by a hardware dealer that Intel offers more stability and reliability but doesn't supports overclocking on its boards. I however, do want mild overclocking abilites from the mobo. Also, he told me that Asus boards are not very reliable and they often give errors and problems with various hardware.
I want opinions from people regarding which would be the better buy supported with reasons.

Also could someone tell me about how the above mentioned boards compete against eachother in some reviews or comparison tests.

I would like to buy the board that would give me better performance and will atleast last me for 3-4 years. Also it should have good support as in drivers, BIOS's, etc.

Please reply and tothose who do, thanks.

I've always had excellent experience with Asus motherboards. Whoever told you that they are unreliable must be an Intel fanboy. :p

I'd have to agree with the hardware dealer on both counts albeit perhaps somewhat exagerrated to an extent (based on my experience of course; YMMV). Nothing more stable/reliable than a Intel board and the reliability of ASUS boards depend on factors like the chipset being utilized, capacitors, etc., not that ASUS boards are generally unstable/unreliable if that's what you think I'm saying but there have been known exceptions. OTOH ASUS holds the cards when it comes to overclocking and flexibity.

I'd get a ASUS unless you can forgo OC'ing and the possible features ASUS may offer over Intel though if you want the maximum in stability/reliability your best bet is Intel.

The chipset is 865PE, capacitors I dunno. I did select Asus board due to its performance in anandtech's 865/875 board shoot-out. The link for the asus mobo is for anyone who wants to look:

What additional features might there be, since both intel 865PERL and asus P4P800-E deluxe boards use the same chipset: 865PE?

How about Gigabytes boards with 865pe chipsets? How do they fare against asus p4p800e deluxe?
