Intel MOBO onboard sound problems

Board = DG965RY; OS - XP SR2. Ongoing probs with microphone using onboard sound card. I can record but the volume is too low to be usable. I have tried just about everything short of formatting my hd. I believe this is an ongoing problem with this board's sound, but I wonder if anyone has found a solution.

I do have an unknown device showing up in Device MGR- a serial device on Com2 -- I think some old modem drivers that will not vanish -- root/serial/0000. But what kind of conflict could cause a volume problem rather than just not letting the sound work at all?

I've spent hours on this, on my 3rd board thinking it was a hardware issue. With the DG965 I did a repair install of XP to readdress the hardware to the OS. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers a dozen times, no joy, including the brand new drivers as of 7/06 which shifted the SigmaTel name to IDT and gave it a better looking UI.

I want to use Skype and am so far foiled.

(Oh yeah, I bought a used x-fi card on Ebay for low $ but XP won't recognize it, even after I removed sound drivers and changed bios from onboard sound.)

I have been on phone to Intel many times, nobody there knows what to do, except they want me to disconnect mobo from case and format hd -- but as I have seen many reports of this sound issue, that seems nuts to me.

Thanks to anyone who can help me.
