Intel Mobo not detecting HD??

Any optical drive on the IDE controllers works and is detected. Tried 3 different ones. Any hard drive on the controller is not detected and and causes the computer to hang at the auto detect during boot up. Any thoughts?
Tried 2 different hard drives so dont think its those, and controller itself should be good due tot he optical drives working. BIOS is set to auto detect for primary and slaves.
Anything I'm overlooking?
