Intel Management Engine Interface

Could someone shed some light into this thing and how exactly does it work? Vast majority of boards have this device built onto them somewhere, and you can install a driver for it.
I got curious yesterday and started googling around, only to get even more confused than before.
I understand it's something that would let me access a PC remotely, independantly of OS or anything, but I got lost in what I found, starting with terminology (there's like 10 different things that seem to mean the same thing, ME, MEI, AMT, vPro, HECI, blabla...), and ending with Intel's completely useless site.

Provides thermal management for Intel® Desktop Boards. The Intel® Management Engine Interface (Intel® ME Interface) is the interface between the Intel® Management Engine firmware and the host. Drivers and applications on the host that wish to interact with Intel® Management Engine through host interface would use the Intel® ME Interface host windows driver.

I have heard that the Asus AI suite (and others I am sure) use this for their thermal numbers.
