EDIT: Ok, I'm a bit confused. Look at Fortune 500's "Methodology and FAQ" page:

Here's how we did the calculations. For the industry rankings, the Hay Group consultancy took the ten largest companies (by revenues) in 58 industries...

Not sure why Fortune 500 would make a poll like this if they were going to exclude the vast majority of other companies out there. For example, in their "Financial Soundness" list, they include several companies that have easily performed worse last year than, say, nVidia (Intel for example didn't have nearly as good a 2001 as nVidia).

Far too simplistic IMO, but Intel definitely did the best out of any of the other companies, which just goes to show what "10,000 executives, directors, and securities analysts" perceive about certain industries....
