Killer deal on the 920.. Sigh... I just ordered a i5 750 and p55m-ud2 mobo for my new comp and it's not even built yet :(. There's a MC around my work area to boot... double :(.

On a recent trip to the St. Louis, MO area, I got to experience my first MicroCenter. I have never seen a store packed with so much geeky goodness, I thought i had died and gone to geek heaven. I may need to consider relocating, no Microcenter here, no Fry's here!

How can they sell i7 930's for $200 when all the other places like Newegg/Amazon are selling them for around $300?

It shows the Microcenter at Denver having 165 in stock, I have to drive to Denver wednesday to pick someone up at the airport, maybe I'll make a pit stop to check the store out. I would love to upgrade my system, but I almost want to just wait for 32nm Intel Quad core processors before I upgrade.

They have a special agreement with Intel about pricing. Newegg/Amazon/Etc.. Don't

If one is going to overclock, is there any point to buying a 930 instead of a 920?

Even though 1366 motherboards are more expensive, does this pretty much even the cost with the 860?

I still can't choose between the 920 and 860, and this just made it harder...

These processors sell for around $270-$280 on eBay after doing a quick glance on a bunch of completed listings, I bet if you bought a bunch of these from MC for $215 after tax and then sold them on eBay, after eBay and PayPal fees, you could make around $30 per processor.

Tempting to pick up 50 or so of these processors and sell them on eBay, make around $30 per processor, total of $1,500 as long as you can turn an average of $30 profit on each one you sell. Hmmmm, I'm going to have to look into exactly how much they sell on eBay, and find out exactly how much the eBay and PayPal fees would be if I sold them at $275 to figure if it is worth the risk.

What do you guys think?

Pretty sure it is Limit 1 so it is not worth the hassle imo

edit: yeah it says limit 1 on the page

Well there goes that plan :) I bet they would still let you pick up a couple, after all they are a business and are trying to sell a product, so if a customer wants a few I bet they wouldn't make a fuss about it.

I think they are selling them below cost. Loss leaders are nothing new, and they certainly get great attention for it.

I just picked up my i7-920 there two weeks ago for $199. I'm not going to bother with a price match. There was only qty 1 i7-920 at my local store, and a few hours later it was gone. I'm pretty sure they'd insist product was in stock to price match.

However, I just cracked it open on Saturday to install in my new build, if I'd waited one more week I could have had the 930 for the same price. Oh well....

i want an 860 as well. I cannot justify it though my i5 661 is over clocked to 4.2 with a minimal +.05 vcore. I havent bothered to go any higher as this seems pretty stable. On air and at load it averages at about 60C. With summer coming this seems like a good place to stay. The 860 is like the 661 with onchip gpu right?

Chances are they have done their research. It may very well be that by giving $50-100 off a processor, the average customer ends up going there instead of buying from online or a competitor. Then they pick up cases, mobo, ram, videocard. So you add $10-20 on top of the regular MSRP prices for these other items and over the total system, Microcenter may make a $150-200 profit. However, it only cost them $50-$100 to get you into the store. (I am obviously just guessing with these numbers). Hence, just Store Pick-up ONLY option.

The other thing is it may be a way to create good publicity and indirectly advertise your brand. If 200 people save $50 on a processor, they will tell 500-1000 other people that Microcenter has the best prices. This word of mouth advertising may actually be less costly than national TV advertising which would compete with Best Buy.

There is no limit even though there is one posted. Last time I asked, the guy said I could buy as many as i wanted. Bad thing for you though is you will not hit your 50 limit as Denver only has 25 right now and will probably sell out fast at this price.
Also you will have to beat me there:D J/K I might have to buy one for someone though.
You are probably looking at $190-195ish after tax. you should easily be able to make $30 on ea one sold. Heck, you can easily sell new cpu's here for at least $230 to members that do not have a MC, but thats a little messed up on your fellow teamates.

Why not get your $20? if your far away, they will do it over the phone. Back in the day I bought 2 for $230 then within a week they had the $200 price. I live 70 miles one way from MC; I called and they refunded me the difference on both cpu's right over the phone. they can pull up your sale on their system. Phone call to get $20 back is well worth it to me

You're right, I dunno what I was thinking. I just called them up, they looked up my receipt by last name, and credited $21.65 back to my card. Love Microcenter!!!!!

They get an Intel channel rebate based on their volume, plus it is a loss leader. Notice that they don't sell online at that price? They want you in their shop. When you buy, you need to get a sales associate to assist you as they are in a cabinet/display. Of course at that time the guy/gal will ask if you need anything else to go with your new CPU such as a motherboard or some shiney new RAM.

I would love to upgrade my system, but I almost want to just wait for 32nm Intel Quad core processors before I upgrade.

32nm will be Xeons and won't hit Core i7 for a while.

Damn, I have a MC really close to me. It's becoming really hard to fight the itch to upgrade my E8500 that I've only had for a year and a half.
