How bad is the is stock HSF? Will it cause the CPU to throttle since it can't keep it cool? Is saving $20-$30 on a decent copper pipe cooler worth it when not-oc'ing?

They would work just fine under normal conditions and throttling is very unlikely. Unless you live in a desert, don't bother.

It's good enough that you're highly unlikely to throttle in most workloads (possibly in avx power virus type scenarios, but I think that has more to do with the TIM anyway...) the real question is whether or not it's too loud for you under your typical loads.

Yep....Those stock Intel coolers tend to be pretty whiney when they ramp up.

I personally do not like stock coolers. I'd switch it to one of these Noctua NH-U12 S not only will it cool better they are basically silent.

I was just forced to swap out my stock HSF on a 4790k at stock clocks due to poor performance. Would overheat & turn off while gaming. Ventilation was not the issue and had seated/re-seated, etc.

Grabbed a Phanteks PH-TC14PE, and at stock clocks doesn't even hit 60C under max load, much less overheats to the point of failure.

Now I'm getting confused about which thread and which post . . .

I think I'll log off and come back later. . . .
