Quick question for someone. I am trying to use the i5 graphics for TV-out and I am not getting audio with it. The motherboard has onboard audio which I do not use, I use my own sound card. Im guessing I need to be using the onboard audio for tv-out audio to come through? If so, that kinda sucks because I like using my own sound card.

Go into the sound properties (Start-search sound) and see if the default is set to your sound card.

Sound properties in windows I guess youre saying? OK thanks. Will check it out.

1. go into the bios and turn off the onboard sound
2. put sound card in
3. install drivers

Not sure if you didnt read what I wrote or not but I am obviously at that point already since I know I dont get sound going through the hdmi cable when its output to tv. My soundcard is installed. The sound still goes through my headphone jack when it should be going through hdmi cable.

AFAIK the only sound signal that goes through HDMI cable is that generated by the HDMI Audio output device (separate to any external and on-board soundcard).

In your case, you still need to use a separate cable to connect your soundcard output to your input device (e.g. TV speakers). Windows and/or media player software also needs to be configured so that the audio output device is set to that of your soundcard.

Yeah. Thats kinda what I thought. I was afraid of that. I guess it works a little different when the video is coming from the cpu/motherboard. Sucks though. Probably a reason to use a video card instead. : / Damn.

Is there a particular reason (other than, I guess, SQ) you must have the soundcard as part of the chain? I used to do things the hard way too with an Audiotrak Prodigy but eventually the simplicity (one cable for video and audio -stereo to multichannel-signals) of HDMI won me. Much much tidier and less fussy than a bunch of snaking analog cables, which in turn are susceptible to interference. I have no SQ issue with HDMI either.

p.s. The above scenario is for my HTPC. I suppose if you have a separate audio system/speakers to that of your TV/lounge room, I can see the reason why the soundcard needs to stay...

I think youre just slightly unclear on what I am trying to do. I am just trying to make it so when I output to my TV, the audio goes through the hdmi cable. One cable for everything makes life efficient and easy. With a video card with hdmi output, the audio automatically switches to hdmi cable when outputing. This way I can use my soundcard with my headphones for everything normally and when I switch to tv-out, the audio switches to HDMI cable through the video card. This is how I had hoped it would work with the integrated video, but obviously it does not.

I sold my video cards off to wait for new series to come out, so my plan was to use the hd 3000 graphics off my newly upgraded 2500k until I got a new vid card. Now to get audio, it looks like id have to go through the sound card which is kind of a pain in the arse.
