Too bad they don't have online deals like this.

I just looked, this price is also included in the bundles!

The pricing of i7-4790K is just as delicious: $280. To give some idea about how good this deal is: newegg has this CPU listed for $330 at the moment.

Why would a retailer cut price so drastically? It is not as if Intel are rolling out Skylake next month or anything. Is this type of pricing a desperate measure to drive some foot traffic into dying brick-and-mortar stores?

Also, does this give us an idea of the kind of margin retailers and/or distributors enjoy on Intel CPUs, or is microcenter possibly taking a small hit by selling some SKUs below cost (to them)?

A loss leader? I don't know if in-store only offers warrant their own threads, not only is it US only but also only for people who live close to a MC. Having that said it's a great value. I wish I could buy things that cheap I would have to spend close to twice that to buy that CPU.

I believe it's a loss leader.

OP, pretty sure the 4690k is ALWAYS $199 at MC. In the past, this has been the price for unlocked i5s of other gens (at least I certainly remember it being true for Ivy Bridge) as well.

These CPU deals are as Lepton87 pointed out, either a loss-leader, or at least a break-even leader for MC. If you're willing to go to the store to pick up a CPU+MoBo combo, there's a good decent chance you might pick up other components, or even do your whole build there. On top of that, most

They have similarly aggressive price for AMD CPUs/APUs:
http://www.microcenter.com/site/products/amd_bundles.aspx

That A10 is at least $30 cheaper (not including the additional discount on the MoBo) than I've seen it at newegg, the 8320/8350 aren't amazing relative to newegg and others, but the 9370 is only $199 and the 9590 is only $220.

If it's always at $199.99, my bad, I just noticed that price @ Microcenter while looking up components for building my Dad's PC.

Sometimes I wished I lived in the Mighty USA :(

I am quite sure MC still earns a good margin on those chips. I doubt they cost them more than 150$ in volume purchase.

It's tough to tell obviously since I don't think either Intel or MC publish those numbers, but my suspicion is that they're closer to "break-even-leaders" than loss-leaders.

My cpu and motherboard in my sig were purchased from Microcenter for that very same reason/price.

Got the cpu for $199 and the ASRock Z97 Pro4 for $109 - $40 combo = $269 + tax

Been rock solid for me and love ASRock's bios far more than Gigabyte's or MSI's.

The really sweet deal at MC is $300 i7 5820K + $240 Asrock X99 Extreme 4 - $40 mobo bundle combo - $25 mobo MIR = $475. Here in Canada the 5820K by itself is $419 USD (since 13% tax ~ USD/CDN FX).

It is a damned good deal if you need something like that.

BTW....the rebate is now $35 for the month of Nov. on that mb.

In other words 4690k is still a crappy deal.

If I didn't live 250 miles from the nearest Microcenter.
That didn't stop me when I built my i7 920 setups way back when.
Took a day trip from Ames, IA to Minneapolis to pickup a bunch of i7 920 + EX58-UD3R combos, plus got some good grub (Hell's Kitchen, Marla's Carribean). :)
In other words 4690k is still a crappy deal.
If it weren't for the premium on DDR4, even the 4790K would be a crappy deal, since you can get the 5820K for $299.
Was tempted to swap out my 4770K, but in the end it was cheaper to upgrade a second rig from a G2140 to a 3770 to help out with render jobs.

btw, if you (OP) or anyone here see any good deals on CPUs that aren't normal microcenter "in store only" deals, feel free to post them in the hot deals forum. The CPU forum is technically not the place to post that sort of information, not that it's a big deal or anything.

IINM, Fry's has the 4770K for $222. Not sure if that's in-store only.

At $200 there is no way anyone in the business loop is losing money on that CPU.
Yeah, you are most likely right as always, I didn't look up its MSRP which is $243.00, I don't know why but I thought about 4790' MSRP instead which is easily over 300$ but there are some combo deals where they sell things over 50% lower then their MSRPs. It's hard for me to believe that they don't loose money on those deals as that would mean they operate on very fat margins of over 50% which is very high in retail. I know some small computer shops and they operate on margins that are very often under 10%. Unfortunately there are no such combo deals where I live, on the other hand I always like to have the best motherboard for a given socket(somehow I got hooked on those ROGs) however those bundle motherboards are usually the lowest grade ones.

Still I couldn't have resisted a 5820K with a mobo for the same price as I paid for just my CPU, especially considering the fact that I actually paid more for my motherboard than I did for my CPU so I would have spent half as much. It would have been too tempting a deal to pass on, still no one in my country will offer any combo deal like that, hell, I would probably drive to Germany to get that.
