I just recently installed a new z77 gigabyte mother board, an i5 3570k and a 7970 into my computer. For some reason when i turn it on and go to the bios (keep in mind im using an old hard drive that still has windows 7 on it that i have yet to reformat) the screen turns on, my card is powered up, im in the bios but i look at my cpu fan. it spins like once every 5 seconds almost like its struggling to spin. This is the stock intel fan that came with the cpu. Im worried now why its not spinning. I turned it off after a few seconds because i didnt want anything to happen to the cpu. Does anyone know whats wrong?

It's most likely working correctly. The fan doesn't spin up until the CPU actually starts to heat up.

That doesn't sound right to me. Even going into the BIOS I've always noticed my fans spin up. Can you test the cooler on another pc like the one in your signature? Or maybe try to plug the fan into another power plug via the power supply leads rather than the motherboard (maybe the power plug on the motherboard is bad)?

Is the fan cable rubbing on the fan? The Intel stock cooler always has that issue and may be causing too much resistance to the fan to allow it to spin.

When it is off try rotating the fan by hand and see if you encounter much resistance.

well the fan turns on now...before it said it was 41 degrees in bios now it says its 68....if i wait a while in the bios it freezes and i cant move the mouse or push any buttons on the keyboard...when trying to install windows it freezes and hangs.... sometimes it shuts off.... i have no clue what the hell is going on.... Ive built many computers in the past....and im unsure what the problem is. Just now i tried to install windows and it shut down on me

Sounds like it CPU is shutting the system down due to overheating
Check the mounting of the Heatsink, Intel retail cooler is a pain to install.

Personally I always throw them out.

this is retarded so now even though windows tried to install on this hard drive. I manage to get into the windows install screen. It says cannot format this drive. And that windows cannot be installed to disk 0 partition 1.

okay so i fixed that problem by booting straight from the dive instead of efi mode. Lets see if it installs now.

this is the wierdest thing ever it stopped crashing stopped freezing and i installed windows and no problems so far. This doesnt make any sense... the only thing i did was lay the computer flat down instead of standing it up....what could be the problem?

Does anyone have an idea what the problem might be. It seems that if i stand the computer upright it crashes and freezes if i leave it lying down it runs perfectly fine.

Sounds like the CPU heatsink isn't making good contact, possibly those infernal push pins aren't all in. When vertical, gravity pulls one end down, whereas when the case is laying down all 4 pins make even contact. Just a guess.

As already pointed out the standard intel coolers are prone to getting their fan blades caught on the fan cable, maybe when you turned the case over it moved the wire slightly, could have been a sticky bearing also but that is highly unlikely tbh. Whenever I build for myself/friends I always reccommend an aftermarket fan, doesn't even have to be a masive one I just hate the standard intel coolers and how clogged up with dust they get.

The fan issue is fine, ive already solved that. Its not getting caught up or anything. The issue i have now, is that somehow i managed to fix the crashing and freezing. But only when the case is laying down flat. If i stand it up, i start to get freezing and crashing, almost right away.

I have checked it.... when i stand it upright it seems just as tight as it is when its laying down.

I would remove the heatsink completely, reapply thermal paste, and reseat it.
It only takes a slight gap for the heatsink to be rendered useless and have the CPU overheat. And the more you allow it to happen (even if it shuts off) you risk damaging the processor.

If you really want to solve this problem then you need to take the motherboard out of the case and see if its orientation still produces the odd effects you describe. If so then you can be fairly confident it is the heatsink mounting. If so then you should be able to apply pressure to the heatsink while it is on its side and make the problem go away.

You could be earthing somewhere on your case but i really don't see how that would produce the symptoms you have listed. Mobos dont have moving parts, orientation really doesn't matter so if moving it from horizontal to vertical is changing the way it funtions it is something you have plugged into the board moving around and as has already been pointed out the number 1 culprit at this point is your cpu cooler.

Fixed it was the cooler as stated in one of my other threads. Weird it took looking at the back of the motherboard to realize that only two pins were fully through. Even though the other pins seemed to be all the way pushed in. Oh well lesson learned with these push pins, which btw i hate very dearly.
