INTEL HSF in Retail CPU Package...Good? Average? Bad?

Like many people, I bought the 2.4 retail package from Newegg. I am wondering how good the HSF is that comes with the CPU. I am using this fan with OC to 2.8ghz. When computer is idle, it's at 35C and shoots up to 49C in games/prime 95. Should I consider getting a better HSF? If so, what do you guys recommend?

Thanks

Nah, the stock unit is fine for that overclock. If you were trying to push it over 3 GHz, you might wanna get a better cooler.

I would agree, except for the fact that the cpu temp shoots up that far under load. Your CPU is at 35C idle, which is pretty good, but 49C under load, which is quite an increase. This suggests to me that you have good air flow and decent case temperatures, but you're not dissipating the heat well when the CPU heats up.

I think a more powerful hsf would be worth considering. I know more about AMD than Intel these days, but 14C seems like quite a jump to me.

That is normal for the P4. I think it is because the P4 has a heatspreader, where the cooler on the AMD would be touching the core directly, which would allow for better cooling. But, at least you don't have to worry about cracking the heat spreader, which is probably what Intel had in mind when they designed it.

Prime95 is a little more agressive than most games. Try running a game for an hour and see if it really goes up 14 degrees.

You are okay if it maxes out at 49 degrees. If you want to get more out of the 2.4, then you should look around for a better fan.

This is not really true. The Northwoods won't clock much better even if you get a better heatsink, and overclock just fine with the stock unit.

As Kingchicken2 mentioned, he has gotten 2.8 GHz out of it using the stock unit, and his temps are fine.

thanks for all the replies.

I am thinking about pushing it over 3ghz by getting a good pc2700 ram or generic pc3200. (Right now I have a generic PC2100 from outpost running at 312MHZ...can't complain.) If that's the case, what would be a good HSF air cooling unit to buy? Any suggestions?
