Intel gained two percentage points of market share in the processor market in the second quarter and six percentage points compared with a year ago in the depressed PC market.

The Santa Clara, Calif.-based chipmaker commanded 82.8 percent of the worldwide market for processors, including sales of processors for Microsoft's Xbox, according to Mercury Research, a market research firm. That's up two percentage points from its first quarter market share--including Xbox--of 80.8 percent and up nearly six points up from the 77.1 percent share from the same period last year.

Basically what we should have expected. Intel will likely gain another 2% next quarter as well since AMD has nothing that can compete in sheer speed.

Nothing surprising here knowing that AMD has not released any new products in a while. Intel continues to move forward and they are doing so at a pretty rapid rate.

Not a surprise considering product development in the last year for amd has come to a crawl...all in all it could have been worse...

Not surprising. I actually expected worse.

I'm beginning to think there's some serious problems going on over at AMD. Not sure if it's related to the .13um process alone or issues with the K8 but they seem to be having trouble making anything other than hot 2200+ and a few lower grades for HPQ's laptops. Clearly UMC isn't shipping jack or there would be enough .13um Tbreds @1.7Ghz and lower for resellers to hock a few every now and then. What really pisses me off is that for the last three shareholder conference calls they've basically been saying that .13um is going great. I may not be a seasoned engineer in the semiconductor industry, but what AMD says and what AMD does have not shown anything great on .13um. I'm pretty glad I redeemed my shares of the company when I did.

I sure hope things turn around for AMD. If not, hopefully IBM or Texas Instruments will decide that it makes for a good takeover target.

So it would seem the long pipeline/high Mhz route was the best for Intel. I for one thought it might not be but who could really know?

well...the way I see it and the way the public sees it. What's faster is always faster no matter what you say about it.

In other words if the technology isn't as high in one product but it's a faster product then that's what people will buy because they want the best.

Well thats true, but it would seem in this case that the faster product also has the better technology...

If it didn't, it would not be the faster product.

Bearing in mind that i'm only applying this to the current AMD vs. Intel situation, not to processors or parts across the board.

Anyone else get the feeling that Intel wasn't overly concerned about it's loss of market share ~12 months ago?

Guess we're finding out why...

And without being a Zealot, I dont believe things will change in a hurry.
If you do think AMD will take 'the crown' back then great - I dont think they will for any length of time, anytime soon ;)

Competition is good. Monopolies are bad.

As long as there are great sub $200 procs available, I will not complain about either company.
