Intel FX Pentium II motherboard CPU upgrade options? UPDATE: It's an FX board, not an LX!!!!

I know I should know this, but I haven't done anything with an LX chipset in over 2 years.

Anyhow, I have a buddy with a Pentium II 266 on an LX motherboard. He's tight for cash and needs a CPU upgrade. I am thinking Celeron, as he should be able to keep his motherboard, RAM, etc. He has 128MB, and just needs a little more processing speed. His use is mainly Internet.

How high can he go?

UPDATE: I found out that it is NOT an LX board. It is an FX board. I read that FX boards do not support a Celeron CPU. Is this true?

It's an Intel OEM board. I don't think it can be overclocked. I am thinking it can take a 466.

I think that it's mostly a BIOS issue. It will probably take Celeron 1 CPUs without problem, but might have problems with the Celeron 2. That's just a guess, though.

you could run a celeron 2 566 or above on it, but your motherboard might not support the right voltage and might only go down to 1.8v is stll too much, well you could run it but not too good in the logn run.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to continue digging into it. So far, it looks like a 466 Slot-1 Celeron is his best bet. From what I can tell, that will definitely work.

Safe upgrade would be a Celeron 533 and Sloket, it is the fastest "Celeron A"
faster Celerons are Coppermine128 Celeron2's

LX or FX? Make up your mind...:)

FX boards are unlikely to have BIOS support for the Celeron. FX boards will only happily support up to Pentium II 333MHz, and that's it.

No SDRAM, no AGP, PIIX3 (no ATA33).

If you wanted to change motherboard, you would have to change RAM as well.

If it is a FX board, you might be able to get one of those special adapter upgrade CPU's from Kingston and Evergreen. They now have them that go up to around 500mhz. They come on a slot 1 card similar to a slotkey card.

Good point. I'll look into one of those upgrade chips from Evergreen or Powerleap. They slipped my mind. My friend who owns this system is a (broke) college student. I am just trying to help him get a litte boost that will buy him some time before he has to drop a big amount of coin.
