Intel Extreme Graphics 2

Cogman

Im searching for a good laptop to buy for my mother, I want it to at least be able to play SOME games but I dont know how mobile Vid cards are weighted. Based on speed how would you guys rate it IE.

Intel EG < radeon 7500 < Intel EG2 < 9000 < 9200 < 9600 < 9700

if they are like the desktop parts, then it would go like this.

Intel X < Intel X II < p00p < 7500 < 9200 < 9000 < 9600 <9700

you should be able to play quake 1 games with anything p00p and below

Exactly. Intel eXtreme[ly crappy] graphics are usually weaker than the second gen "GPU" cards (GF2 GTS and Radeon 7500).

I dont know who reviewed it but they tested the new RS9800 which is i think an X800 against the newest Intel Graphics Xtreme, and the ATi just totally blew it away in anything, so please dont bow down to the Intel machine and get a nVidia or ATi, always trust the guys who actually make the specific product!

I was able to play Doom III on my intel extreme graphics (until my 6800 arrived), albeit at very low resolution and low quality. But it was very playable at that! Other than that, I could play Civ III and the Sims, but not much else.

I dont think thats true. IEG, even at 640x480 all low with everything off, would still bottom out in fps.

If "playable" means "i could run the game" i guess you could be right.

I agree with this. I couldnt even run NWN above ~18fps on that stupid intel chip. Also, my friend's mx420 could BARELY play doom at rock bottom settings coupled with a 2 ghz p4.

Don't get blown off by advertising... a Mobility Radeon 9600 or similar is able to give you more than enough power for casual gaming...!

I've seen an Acer notebook with P4 1.8GHz, 256MB RAM, Intel Extreme Graphics 2 running EA NFS:Underground at acceptable framerates @ low quality settings...

I've got a MR9600 Pro in my notebook, its an excellent chip. Although, depending on what type of games your mother wishes to play, an MR9000 might be sufficient and save a little on money. I'd still go for the 9600 though.
