Intel Extreme Edition Vs. 670 or 660

I am trying to choose an upgrade CPU. My 530 is not up to it anymore. I have two questions.

If you visit the following link it does not say that the 670 supports the 925x or 925xe chipset, why? What so different from the 660?

http://indigo.intel.com/compare_cpu/sho...867280,867285&familyID=1&culture=en-US

Second question is which one would go for if you wanted to upgrade? I would have liked to get the Extreme Edition but is it really worth it?

Unfortunately, there aren't many left here that still use Intel, so you might not get many responses...except to say that the EE probably isn't worth it at all.

The 3.73 EE is definitely a waste of money.

If you mean the 840EE then it could be worth it if you need the dual core HT.

Otherwise I would go for the 660 from that lot. No point paying the extra really for the 670, unless you have a great wad of cash burning a hole in your pocket.

Are Intel's new 65 nm chips supposed to be compatible with 915 or 925 chipsets? If so I'd wait for them to come out. According to Tom's the new "Ceder Mill" cores use less power and run cooler. Personally, if Intel were my only upgrade path I'd wait 3-4 months for those.

Back on topic, the Pentium EE's have just a few more features available than the standard Pentium 4 processors. They have a higher FSB (helpful if you have high speed ram) and have unlocked multipliers (easy overclocking).

Overall, I'd say don't get the EE, even if you have the money. They have hardly no performance advantages, and the P4 670 is faster (though still very expensive). About compatibility, if the P4 530 works then any P4 6XX will work. Once again if it were me I'd wait, but if you can't, I've heard much more good things about the 6XX series than the 5XX series so any of those would work.

I'd go with the 660, the EE chips are definatly not worth it. The 915 and 925 chipsets do support the 670 as well. They do not support the dual cores and most likely won't support the 65nm chips either.

One of my last P4 478s was a 3.4EE. While it was nice and clocked in the 3.8-3.9 range, by no means was the performance justifying the price over an overclocked 2.4C that I had as well. I'm sure the same holds realitvely true for the 775s.

personally, because ihave a 660, i would certainly take that of the three. firstly, i couldn't justify the extra cost for the 670, when with no effort you can oc the 660 to it in a matter of moments on stock cooling. then if you go above and beyond and get some more cooling such as water or good air, you can get it over 4 ghz pretty easily (mine is running at 4.5 on water cooling... and its not even the best setup). the extreme edition... eh... if you REALLY want to burn off the money get it, and then oc it. but i still think you'll be happier with the 660 both performance wise and it doesn't leave as large a hole in your wallet.
