For a long, long time I have wanted a very simple 9" to 12" laptop computer for writing and listening to music with that would last 8+ hours. Think if it as, essentially, the Nintendo DS of writing tools.
To this end, something as simple as a 486DX4 100MHz "System on a Chip" with 256MB RAM and Windows 98SE would suffice, but I'll be damned if I can find anything like that. Sure, there are "netbooks" all over the place, but there still isn't anything that is truly a simple writing machine that is affordable (ie. less than $149.99) and durable.
Imagine a device like so,
--------------------
Purpose: Writing, research (Internet), DVD quality video playback, listening to music.
Physical Design:
The same size and keyboard layout as ASUS Eee PC 1001P-MU17-BU, only this device would be much thinner and lighter, due to having a smaller PCB and less heat to dissipate. It has a 10.1" 1024x600 LCD.
Battery:
6 Cell, wide/flat design (to aid in thinness).
Specs:
Intel® EP80579 Integrated Processor (NU80579EZ600C) 600MHz
1GB RAM
8GB SD Storage
Optional Internal 2.5" SATA drive
Ports:
1 SD-HC/MMC
3 x USB 2.0
1 10/100 Ethernet
1 Stereo Headphone Jack
12V DC Power Connector
Other:
802.11b/g wifi
Built in 1.3MP Webcam and microphone
Stereo Speakers
Software:
Some Linux Distro that is Windows like, small, free...
Weight:
Less than 2lbs!
-----------------------
This kind of computer would be a "Sub-Netbook", designed to be rugged, simple, and inexpensive. It's powerful enough to watch decent quality video and it's more than powerful enough to run some productivity software - stuff we used to use on 66MHz 486 PCs! These would be great for students, kids, people who travel... really, pretty well everyone.
I simply don't understand why there isn't a netbook like this yet...
