So that means you can buy two for the price of one and still have money left over to buy TGI Friday's 3 Course meal for $12.99. Hot! :p

i paid 116 for e4300 retail at NewEgg ... yesterday *free ship* also :p
[1.1% discount for the 'preferred acct']

you might be interested in my "upgrade" as my rig in sig's MB failed and i HAD to either get an OLD mb or "workaround" with a $35 USB modem and onboard sound.

here goes ... might still be there today if someone wants to do something similar:

Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 Allendale 1.8GHz 2M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor - Retail $116 free shipping

Open Box: ASRock 775Dual-VSTA LGA 775 VIA PT880 PRO ATX Intel Motherboard - OEM $25.00 3 Business Day Shipping $6.13

then i need 2x 1GB DDR2 ... for future also ... although i *could* use my PC 3500
[PC6400 is 'overkill' for the ASrock - it takes PC5400 and will run this Corsair RAM at the slower speed - but with "awesome timings"]

CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - $109 after $50 MIR free shipping

so ... ~$260 for the C2D upgrade ... a PCIe slot ... and i keep my AGP x1950p - for now

--and i can sell my P4 EE for ~$125 and my 1.5GB PC 3500 for ~ $100 ...
or net $35 upgrade

oh yeah ... my P4 EE [hits 3.8G] and 1.5 GB very OC'able PC 3500 go in FST - if all goes well - on Mon

:)

EDIT:

OP is this one Retail? or OEM ... it *looks* to be retail ...

the NewEgg one IS retail with the stock intel HS/Fan

here's hoping for 3Ghz

Wow, slight hope for me to do a cheap upgrade when the time comes. Think that mobo and cpu would be better then my A64 4000+? :)

you are kidding, right? ... twice as much performance when OC'd

only the ASrock mobo is a "bastage"
... it is a decent OC'er ... but will not max the e4300 ... it allows me to use my x1950p AGP but also has a PCIe slot but it is 4x ... so about the same bandwith as AGP which means it will hold back an 8800GTX but not a GTS .. it accepts PC6400 but runs it at 5400 speeds ... it is an *interim* solution

if you are gonna upgrade ... don't wait too long or your current HW may lose value ... PC3500 and older [powerful] CPUs are going for a premium now

... and it is $114.50 shipped at NewEgg ... today

Yeah I was kidding :)
Now that the prices are within a decent reach I will be selling one hell of a pc, taking my left over parts I have laying around the house now, buy the stuff you mentioned there and give myself a much needed cpu and mobo upgrade :)

is the *only* real difference the cache size?

most e4300 - afaik - OC as nearly well as the 6600 ... over 3Ghz
-only the 2MB half-cache making them slightly less of a 'performer' thein their 4MB big bros

I'm thinking about getting the Asrock and 4300 to use with my DDR Ram. The problem is that my AGP card is the ATI Radeon. That's right, no number. I.e. the original.

I wouldn't use the system for gaming, but I might want to encode video or something that is CPU intensive. I'm debating between keeping my old stuff (AGP and DDR) and getting a cheap upgrade (114.50 + 24.99 + 6.13) or getting a cheap ASUS mATX board with new ram ($114.50 + $50 + $80?).

you can use the Radeon DDR in the AGP slot always upgrade to a PCIe videocard with the PCIe slot ... of course it is *only* a 4x PCIe slot ... about the same bandwith as AGP ... so you could use probably use a 8800GTS with little constriction of bandwith

the other thing is ... DDR-1 prices remain high ... but DDR2 prices have fallen thru the floor ... i got 2x1GB Corsair XMS PC6400 for $109 after MIR ... so you might consider selling your DDR on FS/T if it is decent stuff and go for the upgrade

EDIT: same 2x1GB XMS PC6400 for $101 after MIR at ZZF

I bit on this, we had a garage sale yesterday and I did a lot better then I ever though I could, got the cpu, the asrock mobi, may not max out the cpu but for the price I bit for it allowed me to get a stick of DDR2 667 1gig of ram. Once I can afford to pop for another stick I will but for the time being the one stick should hold me over. Looking forward to getting this, been awhile since I had a "newer" cpu, mobo, and ram. Been using my same old stuff for over 2 years now aside of the 4000+ cpu I bought few months ago.

Some point Id like to get a crossfire mobo and another X1900gt and run 2 of those. That should leave me with a heck of a system that will run my games now, and future ones, if anything worth while should ever come out any time soon, at a decent pace for years since that is all this rig is going to do along with being a HTPC.

Thanks op for putting this up, one of the few I have bit on in the hd section in a long time.

OH man I have a smile from ear to ear. I bought the open box asrock mobo for $38 shipped, it just showed up, full retail box, with all the goodies inside, and the mobo smells like new, and the anti wrapper doesnt even look like it has ever been touched :):):):)
I think they sent me a complet new retail package by mistake, or I just got very lucky, either way, damn good $38 shipped I spent on a motherboard.

Now to put it all together and see how much a of bad ass this is going to be compared to my 4000+ :D

Thank you again OP for putting this up, and thank you apoppin for posting this mobo, for I prolly wouldn't of went for the upgrade had you not posted such a cheap board. That made this possible for me to do. Later I want to get a real mobo with crossfire and another X1900gt and make this stuff really fly :)

BTW this is the mobo I ended up with, the Asrock 4coredual-vsta.

They had it 3 days ago as a open box sale for $38 shipped, but as I said it just showed up a full retail, like, and smelling like new.

Nah Im not happy or excited ;)

awesome ! glad to be of help

mine was the older ASrock ... doesn't support Quad core ... but otherwise identical ... and my "open box" was definitely "used" ... just the board ... but only $25:p

-- a couple of bent IDE pins ... but otherwise perfect .... running in rig in sig .... OC'd from 1.8G to 2.81Ghz :)

the only issue was USB peripherals draw too much power on startup and sometime need to be started and then immediately restarted ... and then the MB does a countdown ...

there is a HUGE thread in MBs about the ASrock ... if you need any guidance ;)

enjoy!
