I realize this is a bit of an odd comparison, but...
I was planning on going with the Intel DP965LT for my upcoming C2D rig. Since I'm not planning on overclocking or CrossFiring, it seemed like a sound board for me.
However, now, NCIX (if only Newegg shipped to Canada...) has a sale on the Asus P5W DH, while it's unclear when they might get the DP965LT. The price difference is about $110 (CAD). The worry of sitting here on Aug. 9 and being handed a C2D by my friend the Purolator Dude (Purolator = courier co.) and having no board to put it in.
So, any advice? I'm mostly looking for stability, don't care about OCing or built-in audio, already have 2x1 gig DDR800 sitting on the desk...
Advantages of the Asus board:
- availability
- i975 is more mature (what's all this stuff about P965 steppings?)
- additional PATA channels
- upgrade path to Kentsfield
- additional slot for video cards (even if not CrossFiring, I assume I could put in a cheap PCI-E video card and drive a third monitor?)
- RAID/NCQ support (don't think I'm going to use RAID, though...)
Advantages of the Intel board:
- cost
- it's Intel, and I like having all-Intel everything
- ICH8 and two more USB ports
