> Xeon support, must be a mistake?

Why? These are socket 1155 Xeons. Like the SB Pentiums and Celerons you just need a BIOS that can recognize the CPU.

Of course without a discrete video card the E3-1220L won't work very well :)

ark.intel.com/products/53401/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E3-1220L-(3M-Cache-2_20-GHz)

the ark page says the processor supports ecc memory yet the subject motherboard appears to work only with regular non-ecc memory modules. Hence, my confusion.

"Supports" ECC doesn't mean "requires" ECC though. The /!\ alert popup explains that this may be motherboard-dependent.

The type of memory supported by the processor is dependent on the PCH SKU in the target platform
— Advanced Server/Workstation PCH platforms support ECC and non-ECC un-buffered DIMMs
— Essential and Standard Server PCH platforms support ECC un-buffered DIMM
Found it.
