I recently made the fatal mistake of buying the Intel DG965WH motherboard, which is apparently quite fussy about the memory it will accept. I purchased Crucial Ballistix DDR800, which runs at 2.2V and 4-4-4-12 timing. The Intel board is listed as only supporting 1.8V RAM with 5-5-5 or 6-6-6 timing and many people have complained that Intel does not allow voltage adjustments from their BIOS.
I've checked the most recent BIOS released by Intel and they did implement some memory changes (who knows what), but I've been unable to test so far.
For those who purchased this motherboard, have you had success with RAM that does not run at 1.8V and 5-5-5 or 6-6-6 timing? What were the steps you took to get your RAM to work? Have you noticed performance problems because you have 'incompatible' RAM?
For anyone, if I am lucky enough to get my Crucial working at the 1.8V and default timing provided by the motherboard, will I be taking a serious performance hit? Will the performance of this RAM, configured incorrectly, actually be less than RAM which is designed to run at 1.8V and the motherboard timing? Or will the end performance result be the same?
Alternatively, I can return this motherboard and consider ABIT or Megabyte, which apparently do allow voltage adjustments on *some* of their boards, but the documentation on compatibility is terribly sparse and unreliable.
