I had a system that had a Abit AN8 Ultra, Athlon 64 3800+X2, 2GB memory, GeForce 7800GT, 150GB WD Raptor (10,000RPM, SATA), DVD reader, burner, Antec Sonata 2 case (450W power supply). I decided to jump to a Core 2 Duo processor. I decided I didn't need to do any overclocking, so I went with an Intel DG965RY motherboard, Core 2 Duo E6600, 2GB of OCZ 5-5-5-12 RAM. I put everything together, and the system never really booted up when I powered it on. Basically, all the fans spun up, but I never got any beeps or video signal. I tried removing all devices, and it still happened. I then replaced the memory w/ Kingston RAM listed on the compatability list, but that no-beep no-startup still happens.
I tried pulling the MB out of the case and running it by itself. I also tried unplugging the CPU and re-seating it. After some of that, the behavioor changed: when powered on, the fans spin up for about a half-second, then they start spinning down. After ~3-4 seconds, they spin up for a half second again. This repeats for as long as it's connected. I didn't see anything in the manuals about this condition-- does it ring any bells?
I've also tried plugging the old Abit AN8 MB back in (outside the case, once again), and it doesn't seem to want to start up either. The status LCD on the MB shows either "(blank, 3+dot)" or "(F+dot, blank)" on its display. Neither of which seems to be listed in the AN8's manual.
