Intel DG33TL HD Audio optical out?

Hey guys, so currently I am running my HTPC based on the Intel DG33TL motherboard with Intel HD Audio. It has capabilities to output sound via Optical, so my plan next year is to upgrade to a 7.1 setup with a good receiver and speakers (thinking Onkyo for now). Anywho, so I'm wondering if it would be necessary to upgrade to a good home theater sound card based on the Cmedia chipset to run 7.1 via optical to the receiver, or would I be just fine keeping my current onboard solution?

Also, I was wondering about current surround on Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, the lossless ones. Can our PCs output those formats via optical if we use the right DVD playback software, or is there a hardware limitation?

Any help is appreciated!

BTW, this will be on Vista Ultimate 64.

Hey there,

I have this motherboard. I am pretty sure it won't do 7.1 over optical out, but I may be wrong. I'd just recommend a good 5.1 system over a 7.1 anyway.

As far as the Blu-ray and HD-DVD thing...I believe that is an issue because of HDCP. So you'd be out of luck no matter which sound card you get there.

I do have my DG33TL hooked up with optical to my Panasonic XR-55 and it works well. Passes DD and DTS through fine.

So if I have my 3850 with HDMI (video and 5.1 audio support) that has HDCP, could I output that and get the new audio formats?

I guess 5.1 would be cheaper anyway...
