Does anyone know if the Intel DBX-B cooler (originally released for socket 1366 Extreme Edition processors) is compatible with socket 2011 CPUs?

There seems to be a lot of clashing reports of whether or not they're actually compatible.

Also does anyone have experience with this cooler? Will the small base surface area of the HSF be an issue for socket 2011 CPUs?

From what I have seen the holes dont match up exactly but you can mod it to make it work. But since HSF cost $20-40, I would say why bother? Just buy a 2011 heatsink.

I'm building a dual socket 2011 Xeon rig, and a friend of mine has kindly offered me his LGA1366 cooler for free. If the HSF is compatible with LGA2011, then I can easily buy another one quite cheaply off eBay.

But if it isn't compatible, then yes, I'll have to buy a pair of LGA2011 coolers.

The hole patterns are the same, but the hole dimensions are different for the different type of mounting mechanisms associated with the different sockets. Anecdotal evidence backing this up is there are different brackets for 1366 and 2011 for my Zalman coolers.
