 i hope someone can answer a
'stupid' question, i recently purchased an intel d865perl mobo to upgrade from my buggy
'pieceo'chit" pcchips unit....i have an oem 2.4mhz pga-478 p4 and kingston 512 ddr400 ram w/older nvidia gf2 ti at 4x..anyhoo the board would not POST, even w all connections made correctly, so i sent it back and the retailer benched it and sent it back, said it worked fine, i have emailed intel 8 times and they say it only accepts "mPGA-78 pin CPU"//mine is a PGA-478 pin p4, isnt this the same thing? i really thought they were the same, otherwise i can only see advertised cpu that specify "mPGA-478" at a max of 1>8 ghz and 400 fsb, this board is supposed to support 800 fsb / serial ATA, etc.....anyone have ANY suggestions, i would really appreciate...sorry so long winded..TIA

Welcome to the Forums pbertram :) How good is your power supply unit, what brand/model is it? It has the 4-pin square ATX12V connector, correct (and you plugged it in)?

i suspected that might be the prob. so i bought a new 525watt p4 ready powersupply with the extra 4 pin connector(old one had it too)but no go...had it plugged in both times..

To start with, your CPU should be fine with that motherboard. What other components are you using, both brand and model if you know them? Including the power supply! Cheapie power supplies are the root of many peoples' problems, no matter how much wattage they're rated for. :|

Anyway, if you want to troubleshoot, the next thing I would try is this: remove the motherboard from the case and lay it on cardboard. Give it just one memory module, the CPU and heatsink/fan unit, the video card (ream it firmly into the slot, there's two layers of contacts in that AGP slot), and the keyboard (and make sure the keyboard plug is in the correct hole, the bottom one).

Don't hook up any drives to the power supply or to the motherboard. Try starting the board by making momentary contact across its Power Button pins with something metal. It should give a signal to the monitor, or at least some beep codes if there is a problem.

Incidentally, does the monitor work with other computers?

My powersupply may be considered a cheapeee, it is by"Lead Power" and was advertised for 65 bucks, reduced to 20 on pricewatch..///i tried what u suggested, removed board, plugged in only one stick of mem, the cpu, and the video card which is nvidia geforce2ti 64mg(older)with the newer power supply and connected the powerswitch from the case, although i did forget the keyboard...anyway, the ready l.e.d. on the board comes on and all the fans powerup(even on the vid card) but no POST,,,so i pulled the memory to try to get a beep code, still nothing..everything points to either the mobo or the cpu, all of the components i have are working on my current system..tell ya, it is driving me batsh...t! As you are suggesting, it sounds like the cpu isnt being read but whether it is from my new(and old) powersupplies, my cpu, heck i dont know

Hmm... yeah, tough to know what to replace sometimes. :( Does the stuff still run in your PC Chips if you go back to it now, or did you already get rid of it? Do you have any other DDR modules you could try for the heck of it?

That's interesting. So the components work, except not on the new motherboard. And yet the vendor claims that the new motherboard is working for them.

I'm going to download the manual for the d865perl and see if anything jumps out at me. Sometimes it does help. :) In the meantime, one thing you might inspect is the rear I/O shield, because they often have springy metal "fingers" that are intended to keep good contact with the motherboard's ports and jacks to prevent EMI from leaking out, but if these "fingers" get into the USB jacks or network jack, they can cause a short-circuit.

Back in a few, after I get that manual and skim through it...

Ok, here is an FTP link to the manual I'm looking through, for reference: link

On page 21, I see something rather unusual: it claims that if you want to use DDR400 (PC3200) DIMMs, your CPU must be an 800MHz-based model (2.4C, 2.6C, 2.8, 3.0, 3.2). If they really mean that, then it would explain why your system is a no-go with a DDR400 DIMM (I'm assuming your 2.4 is not a 2.4C, but rather the 2.4A or 2.4B using 400MHz bus or 533MHz bus speeds).

Other than that, if it had a Clear CMOS jumper then I would suggest checking to ensure that it's not accidentally in the "Clear" position, but the mobo layout diagram isn't showing one. Page 75 does show the BIOS jumper that has three functions (normal, maintenance, attempt-recovery), so check it to make sure it's in the Normal position, I guess.

That's all the ideas I've got. If you get too flustrated with it, the Abit and Asus i865PE boards might be worth a look, or another aftermarket brand. Ironic that Intel's house-brand mobo is giving you more trouble than a PC Chips

Good luck pbertram, hope it works out for you somehow!

No problem  I learned something too. In fact, could I ask you to do one thing: click Edit at the bottom of your first post, and add "D865PERL" to the thread's title, so the thread will come up in Searches in the future if another D865PERL owner runs a Search looking for help on this? :)
