Intel CPU installation...

Just received my 4790k cpu and will use the stock heatsink. What do i need to use for a thermal compound?

If this is new, the heatsink should have tape on the bottom. Under the tape is the compound.

There is no tape on the bottom of the heatsink....i see only a copper colored base that I presume touched directly to the cpu surface. Inside the Intel box was the CPU in its little plastic holder and the heatsink...no tape was with it.

does intel provide the necessary heatsink material with each boxed processor? should i contact intel?

Don't waste your time. It will be faster to go to your closest store that sells PC parts and buy a tube of thermal grease for a couple bucks. Worst case you order one online.

Even if intel support is willing to help, it's going to be a fight and then they're going to want you to RMA the entire processor and they'll send you an entire new one. Between shipping to them, processing, and return shipping you're looking at around a month when you could otherwise have thermal grease in a day or two.

yes you are probably right...for a couple of bucks i will do as you suggest. Mayne you can explain the following though...

Arctic Silver CMQ2-2.7G Céramique 2 Tri-Linear Ceramic Thermal Compound - OEM

what is the ceramic component of this material and is it any good?

You ordered a boxed cpu that comes with a stock HSF, and this HSF has no thermal pad on it??? Where did you order this from?

Sorry upon closer inspection of the HSK there is 3 stripes of some soft gray material deposited on the contact surface. So it is good to go as is i think.
