Intel Core i7 920 (2.66Ghz) Overclock

Does anybody think it will be possible to overclock the Core i7 920 to 3.0ghz on air. I'd rather save the money and get the 920. My new system is spec-ing to be $1500 which is going to be hard to afford as it is, so I'm trying to cut a corner on the CPU.

Thanks,
Matt

I think we should at least wait until a review comes out on them before we start deciding what OC will work.

QFT. At this time, we (the general public not bound by NDA) don't know even know what CPUs, MBs, or even what memory voltage will/won't work with Nehalem. Only time will tell.

I want to build a system, but I won't until I at least know a little bit about it before jumping in.

We already know a lot of things. www.core-i7.com They're coming out Nov. 3rd. Another thing is the best ram that I know coming out for them is Corsair Dominator 3GB kit 1866MHz CL9 with airflow fan (TR3X3G1866C9DF). They have detailed pics around the net with the voltage too. I'm looking for them now. I think they're set to 1.65V. I just want to clock my Core i7 920 to 3.0-3.2 and I'll be happy. =)

Sorry, I am not building a i7 build with 3GB of RAM; a 6GB kit (3x2GB) would be minimum specs for me.

Still no in-depth MB reviews on high high each can clock, and how STABLE each board will be. The most stable machine with the most mature BIOS will win the day.

That web site may be where you have seen information, but until there is a review of a respected website (like Anandtech.com), I won't trust any information.

LOL at core-i7.com...
"The Core i7 800 and 900 seem to not be the friend of overcloakers. Even if these processors can overclock automaticly with the turbo mode, they can't work with a tension greater than 1,65V, because this tension must be the same as the memory. Big big problem....
But, INTEL works on this proble"

I stopped reading at overcloakers. Sounds like a strung out Klingon bird of prey, or maybe the lost jedi knight Luke Cornholio with his shirt over his head :p

I assume you're running a 64-bit operating system then for the 6gb kit of DDR3 ram that you plan on purchasing.. correct? Also, which operating system. I hate Vista because it's such a resource hog. XP allows for better gaming. (Which is what I'm using this for)

Speak for yourself.;) Until there's a decent 12GB kit, at a decent price, Nehalem will be as uninteresting to me as an Athlon XP or Pentium 4.*

edit: *And about as useful.

True; when are 4GB DIMMs going to be released? Hopefully sooner rather than later...

You might want to update your links.

I have no idea. I've been expecting them for months now. I'm not sure what the holdup happens to be, unless they just can't get them that dense yet, for whatever reason.

Correct me if I'm wrong but is there any game a quad extreme w/ an overclock can't handle outright? We're gpu-bound for most games aren't we? I7 isn't meant for gaming, not yet anyways, more for people who need 4+ cores with 8+ threads. Your money but I'd still rather get an X48/790i board, stick in a QX9770 and whatever graphics card you've decided on and call it a day. But maybe that's just me.

Actually even duals can run any game the same as quads, quad optimized games as of now still run beyond what any monitor can physically show, assuming the gpu is keeping up, so maybe just an E8600 instead of the QX9770?

ive seen benchmark somewhere where it shows nothing to very little performance difference between 2- and 3-channel memory bandwith. does this mean if you buy nehalem, you are partly paying for something of no use?

Assuming that this is true, then I would assume so. But this would be similar to saying in 2006 when Conroe came out that you're paying for DDR2, which did not give any performance boost. Who the hell cares, Conroe beat the crap out of the previous processors!
