I think the hot deal here is really that the Core i7 will push down Core2 prices for a while. How many people are considering $500-$550 on a cpu/mobo combo a hot deal?

Crap, I feel like I just bought a core2duo. Is this compatible with my old motherboard, or do I have to upgrade again?

You'll need a new mobo. The CPU socket's totally different.

Ha, well screw that. When the prices of the core2s go down enough I'll just upgrade to the fastest one that'll work with my mobo and forget about it for another couple of years.

Here's another "Hot Deal" > Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 with 3 x PCI Express 2.0 x16 (x16, x16, x8)
Don't forget the memory > G.SKILL 6GB

Not bad for a grand total of $849.70

Heck, why not get 12GB RAM? You should also get three new video cards for that rig while you're at it, along with a great big power supply, a few 1.5 TB hard drives, and a shiny new SSD drive (like Intel bundles with their combos). You can have the fastest desktop PC in the world. Why hold back? :)

LOL

That board is total crap, so far away from it.

TankGuys also has the Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz for $319.99. Their shipping is also very fast and their customer service is great!

Why is it crap? A review? Just curious.

It's cheaper because it doesn't support SLI, only Crossfire. And supposedly they don't use "Hi-C capacitors" while other manufactures do, although I'm not quite sure what that means

I hear that. Its like how i invested in Socket 939 right before it left the market. If you couldn't tell i've upgraded it as reasonably as possible.

Just to think it used to be a Venice 3500+, 1.5GB of pc2100 and a BFG FX5500 256mb. What a different system it is now.

if you don't know, then you just wouldn't understand...

of course i'm still using a k7s5a based system at this moment...

The Core i7 CPU's are brand new players on the field.
You can't talk about the Core i7 processors like they are socket 775 drop-ins.
They are a different socket configuration, which requires a different MB than the E8500 or E8600.
Not to mention DDR3 memory.

Someone would make the jump to a Core i7 platform if...
* They were due for an upgrade and had plenty of cash on hand to make the change.
* They want maximum performance, reguardless of price.
* Have a rich uncle that told they to pick their own Christmas present.

Meh, if someone were due to an upgrade, sure i7 is a viable candidate. Most of the people with C2D or C2Q rigs are probably going to sit it out though. C2D/C2Q are extremely capable and cool running machines. Sure, i7 is faster, but save for a few CPU intensive applications that could always use more horsepower like x264 encoding or 3d rendering, there is nothing that current C2D/C2Q systems cannot do.

I'm going to take a second look at i7 once it hits 32nm (by which time intel hopefully will also increase L2 cache), however current prices do not justify first adopter premium for me. My C2D/C2Q are more than adequate for me.

People that consider going to Nehalem should be absolutely clear they understand that they need to upgrade the motherboard and RAM (DDR3) as well and the cost, as mentioned will be around $700-800 minimum. This is for a first generation technology which most day to day applications and games won't fully utilize (quad cores and large chunks of RAM).
