Hello friends in the forum,

I'm at a loss. I'm trying to decide between two notebook (same brand), one with the cpu being Core i7-1355U and the other being Core i5-1335U. Both are 13th generation (latest). But all my search on the Passmark score seems to indicate that the Core i5 is "faster" (higher score).

Specifically, Core i5-1335U score is 18601 while Core i7-1355U score is 15568.

Could someone enlighten me on this?
Thanks.

[TL;DR]
The i5 is not faster, but the advantage of the i7 is not enough to make it the obvious choice.

[Full info]
Depending on the system being tested and the software configuration, the advantage of the i7 may no be immediately apparent, especially with a limited sample of systems. Here's two listings from Geekbench, one for each CPU.
You'll notice there are systems with the i5 that are very close to systems with i7, but the i7 systems seem to score a bit higher on average, and they also get the best max score .

Here's a quick breakdown of what you should expect:
  • the i7 will be the faster CPU, but not in a way that should immediately influence your purchasing decision
  • it will be slightly better quality too, meaning lower voltage for a given frequency
  • it has a GPU with 96 execution units, again a bit better than the 80 units on the i5
  • depending on how well configured the laptop is, the i5 version may exhibit less fan noise variation under light load, as the i5 only boosts to 4.6Ghz vs. 5Ghz for the i7. (and 4.6Ghz is plenty for this CPU)
My recommendation would be to go for the i5 version if both laptops have the exact same config (RAM, SSD, display etc) and the price delta between them is significant. If the price delta between the system is very small, consider the i7 instead. Most importantly though, if any of the systems has a better overall configuration (bigger SSD, more RAM, brighter hires screen etc), you should factor this into your purchasing decision.

If I had to choose between the i7 and more RAM/storage or better screen, I would always choose the latter.
