As we have revealed during our practical experiments, Core Duo can be easily overclocked to 3.0GHz, which is 40% above the nominal clock speed.

40% is a heck of lot, it is now official time to get excited (about Core Duo mainly but conroe too) imo

well, that looks great, but the motherbaord and cpu required are almost $1000 ! I will take a X2 3800 and mobo that gets close @2.6 and $380 . I can get more than 2 X2 3800's @2.6 for that money ! Just not worth it even to me. That motherboard (the only one that supports that CPU per the article) is more than an X2 3800 alone !!

First off, you don't need a T2600 ($650 retail). You can easily get a T2400 for about the cost of an X2-3800+. So now you come up with a $600 combo versus a $400 combo.

But wait! Despite the initial cost difference of $200, you will save costs on energy bills!

Imagine running that 24/7 folding away, at load you save approximately 80W! Or heck, even at idle it eats 40-50W less power! Factor in the electricity bill for 2-3 years, and it sure looks like a bargain!

I still hope to have an Asus N4L-VM soon, which is a $150 motherboard, and see if I can OC well with it.

It won't, its been confirmed by XS already. There will be minimal overclocking unless some magical BIOS comes out that unlocks everything.

Why wait? Its already confirmed that the Aopen board is a drop in replacement with Merom processors.

I try never to base buying decisions on what my be available in a "couple of months." It's a fool's game, just like being a crash test dummy for spanking new technology.

That is some really good performance, but they also used 1.5 volts on the cpu, ouch. That is a lot for cpu that runs on 1.25 or so.

That's more than I put into 90nm dual core A64's!

Power consumption certainly isn't "several times less" at that voltage! But nonetheless encouraging results, that 3 GHz is fairly easy on Intel Core Duo.

Yeah, after looking at all the reviews of that motherboard, don't think I am going to get it anymore. I was hoping for a reasonably priced motherboard that could OC, I do have a limit to my budget, and the $300 Aopen board doesn't fit in it.
