The E6300 is way faster than the pentium-D 920. Bascily, clock speed means little. The core 2 duo CPU's use a much more efficient architecture, and get more work down per cycle. Core 2 duo is 4 instructions/clock, while the pentium-d is 2. Pentium-D's are slower, and run hotter, and use more power than core 2 duo's or Athlon X2's.

Y u want the e6300? Id say the E4300 is better and cheaper or a. e4400 is faster and cheaper at stock.... do u plan to overclock? If ur decided on an e6300 at least get the e6320 for same price and twice the cache...

A stock speed E6300 is about as fast as a 3.4-3.6 Ghz P4, except in video encoding. Once it's overclocked any at all, there's no contest.

E6300.

E4300/4400 just has their fsb lowered to 200 (correct me if im wrong) so it would be a bit slower than an E6300.

Yes, but many can overclock to the same level. The difference is they start from different points...200Mhz vs 266Mhz. Thus when you put memory in, your mobo has to have the proper BIOS update or whatnot in order to run the memory at 533/667/800/1000 vs running it slower.

The E4400 will be faster than the E6300 - the higher clockspeed more than makes up for the slower FSB. Plus, you can just set it to a 266 FSB (on motherboards that allow this) and you have an instant overclock to 2.66 Ghz, without overclocking any component but the cpu. The 10x multiplier really makes overclocking it easy - my E4400 hit 2.9 Ghz on a Dual 775VSTA motherboard, which is not a very good overcloking board. It should hit at least 3.0 Ghz with my new motherboard.

One thing im suprised no one else jumped on.

For most motherboards this is not a drop in upgrade, make sure you have a system that will support Core 2 Duo before purchasing one.

If you are buildling a new system around this CPU, or have already done your research and know your motherboard supports Core, then fantastic!

The Core 2 Duo processors are on average, 20% faster than the Athlon X2s and 40% faster than the Pentium Ds.

Get ANY Core 2 Duo your heart (or budget) leads you to. You won't regret it....

Listen to this advice, you won't go wrong by doing what he suggests bar none.

Yes take it from another amd defectee who went to c2d from an opteron 175. C2d is way faster than anything else available to you right now in the desktop segment.
