Found a C2D 4300 for $35 and was wondering if it would be better than my Pentium D 3.2ghz?

Thanks, Mitch

yes. exclamation point. sell your pentium d on ebay or fs/ft and you'll make money AND have a much better/faster cpu.

Let's not get carried away that EVERY c2d beats EVERY PD. Yes, an e4300 pwns a PD3.2.

But a 3.7GHz PD Extreme Edition w/ HT will pwn an e2140.

Not once you OC the 2140 to 3-3.2

you can OC the e4300 up there too :D
my e4300 was like 60 bucks and after buying a cooler that cost more then the chip (lol)
i got it to 3.25
When i first built the rig i was in the top 10 overclocks for air cooling listed on 3dmark06 pro.. didnt last long though hehe
so yes, e4300 pwn the world for its cost

the quads are coming down.. but they are most certainly not 30 bucks :D

I think everyone here will agree that the C2D E4300 is better than the Pentium D 935. The E4300 performs better and consumes less power than the 935. Should you decide to OC, the E4300 has quite the headroom for that. ;)

At $35, I'd definitely take that E4300 without hesitation.

Definitely C2D beats Pentium. THe E4300 should hit 3.0Ghz without much problem. Just make sure the E4300 is not a secondhand from someone who ran their OC too hot. Some enthusiasts could've burned it up too hot for too long, and it may not run well when overclocked. If you're not looking to OC it should work fine.

even if it's a crappy e4300 that only oc's to 2.2 or 2.5 it will be tons better than the pentium d. well, unless your house gets too cool in the winter...

I bought an e4300 in a Fry's bundle many months ago. Recently I bought an ASUS mb to replace the ECS board that came with the bundle. I run CPDN, a DC project, on this system. So, it runs 100% utilization 24/7 for months. I had it set to 2.4Ghz (9x267) until this week. I picked up some new RAM and started playing with more OC'ing options. I tried 2.67 Ghz (8x333), then bumped it to 2.8 Ghz (8x350). With each change I let it run for a few days to see the results and stability. I am blow away at how easily this chip can OC. I am running it with a CHEAP Cooler Master HS/FAN that I picked up for about $20.

It is the Best OC I've had since the days of the Celly 300A.

There there, i feel your pain. You have to justify your pricey P4EE purchase and say that it plows all over a $75 cpu...

It's a legitimate point. As evidenced by this thread, there is a tendency to assume that every Core 2 Duo is better than every desktop Netburst chip. And at launch, that was true. The E6300, which was the slowest launch chip, was faster than every Netburst desktop chip, including the $1000 ones.

But Intel has launched some slower models since then, so you can't count on that absolute anymore.

Anyway, assuming the OP doesn't need a new motherboard, this is a good deal.

Not to forget that an E2140 is really actually pretty slow (by modern standards) at its stock 1.6GHz and somewhat restrictive 1MB of L2 cache.

I course overclocking with these chips really is a no-brainer (and also makes the decision a no-brainer), and is something of a crime NOT to be done :p (unless you're looking to undervolt / passively cool, although I'm sure both could be done even with some minor overclocking)
