Ok so my friend tried building my first P4 for somebody who bought there stuff from compusa. Got the 2.4Ghz 800MGhz bus P4 with HT. Unfortunately the mobo we got is the GA-8IP900-(L) Gigabyte which only supports FSB 533. We also only have one ram stick of PC2700.

System wouldnt post, nor give beep, fans ran nothin else.

Guessing these are the following problems.
1. Wrong motherboard need 800mghz FSB mobo
2. Using Pc2700 Ram which is to slow.
3. Using only one ram stick when the 800Mghz P4's need 2 ram sticks.

We are thinking we will return the P4 and replace it with the 2.4 with 533Mghz FSB.
If we do this does the 533Mghz processor also require 2 ram sticks or will one suffice?

Thanks for your help guys.

I know, I know...he shoulda done more research and planin before he went out...and god forbid the person who shops at compusa for parts, I already gave him that lecture.

The PC2700 will work. It will slow the system down. If you are not going to use Dual Ch memory, then the 800Mhz FSB P4 will go to watse.

So either get a 533mhz chip and be happt with it, or get a new board.

That chip will work in that board and so will the memory. You need to go into the bios and manually configure the CPU once you are able to post. Do you see any lights on the MB? Do you have both pwr connectors connected to the MB? Also make sure the vid card is seated poperly.

I am that friend. Basically it's a 2.6c / 800mhz fsb. and gigabyte mobo ga-8ip900(L) series and ddr 333 (1 stick only). i figure it's a seating problem, i got it to work.... but only with the heatsink IMPROPERLY put on, without the latches and only if the tower was laying on it's side. with latches or any other position (even after many reseats) it shows the same issues with the pc not posting at all. mobo? cpu? not sure which one to pinpoint as the isolated issue.

The bits that you have should all work

1 - The processor while 800 will happily run at 533
2 - The memory will run fine but not as dual channel as this needs two sticks.
3 - The mobo obviously accomodates the above.

Most common reason for not being able to fire up the mobo is incorrect connections. Do Following

Clear CMOS settings as shown in the manual.
Check that your video card is seated properly and working (If onboard not necessary)
Do Same with Ram (it must be right down !)
Check power to CPU ( Is CPU fan running?)

Turn off PC at mains, wait 5 minutes.

Restart PC and press the bios key (Delete) on Gigabyte mobo

If You get the bios screen go through and change settings to match your kit

1 - Single channel Ram
2 - 533 Fsb

Hope this helps.

Take the MB out of the case, set it on the box or some other anti-static material (cardboard will work as will the AS bag the MB came in) and try to post. It is sounding like it is the MB installation that is at fault here. Maybe a loose screw, an extra standoff, on overtightened screw, etc, etc. Best way to find out is start all over and boot just the bare essentials outside of the case. Not sure about the HS latch problem as I am mainly AMD but I know I read about a problem once with an ASUS MB that bowed a bit too much from the HSF installation and caused similar troubles. Intel says a little bit of bowing is "normal". LOL! Is this the stock Intel HSF?

Yes it's the stock HSF, and I don't think it's a short somewhere on the mb though, but i'll try. Everything seems to be powering up well enough.

Ok yall, thanks. It worked, well the remounting part, BIOS IDE drive detection a little more sluggish than what I'm used to seeing. His motherboard doesn't like certain mounts on certain points (even though it has holes for em).
