Which one's better and what are the differences??

I'm trying to decide between a 845G based mobo and a 845E based mobo (From Gigabyte btw).

not all boards have the 4:5 ratio at 133 MHz bus. the MSI 845G MAX doesn't. however, the 845G is still the better chipset because even at 266 MHz DDR, the memory performance will be better on the 845G than the 845E. intel tweaked the memory controller on the 845G to improve performance when integrated video is used. good for us, though, that that tweak exists even when not using the integrated video.

The 845E supports / features:
DDR, 400/533 Bus, Lan, 6 USB 2.0, and Audio.

The 845G supports / features:
DDR and SDRAM, 400/533 Bus, Lan, 6 USB 2.0, Audio, and has integrated graphics.

Source 845G here and 845E here

I would definitely go for the 845E. On paper the 845G looks better but in actual overclocking and tweaking, the i845E is better. Let me get a little more specific, the P4B533 is the board you want. With a little tweak, you can use a 3/4 FSB/memory ratio over 133MHz FSB. You'll get some crazy memory scores if your memory can handle it. ;) Anyway, I've done research on just about every i845E and i845G board, and it looks like the P4B533 is the DDR board to get...well, for me it is. ;)

Actually if it where me (which it?s not :p) I would also consider one more chip! SiS 648!!!

This chip is looking sweater every time another review gets posted. This chip has mad potential. Just something to consider.

As far as E & G, I went with E. Everyone around here is fast to suggest G, however I have yet to see G crush or even outperform E by any significant margin. In fact many reviews show E outperforming G (you can check out HardOCP & Hot Hardware for a few good reviews).

But if you are set on E or G then the real thing is to consider the manufacturer. Personally I wouldn?t go with anyone other then ASUS, or ABIT.

Then again, that?s just my opinion. :)

What about Gigabyte? I was cosidering their GA-8IGX board.

After several bad experiences with Abit and MSI and even one from Soyo, I have been using either Gigabyte or Asus boards exclusively. But when I read so much about the Epox 4G4A, I bought one to overclock a P4 1.6. Must say that I am very impressed with it. Stable as a rock. Guess I will have to add Epox to the favorite list now! :D

Not to seem like i'm piggybacking on your thread (even though i am, kinda), could someone describe the main difference(s) between the Intel i810 and i815 chipsets as well? Thanks :)

I've never used one though I did consider it once or twice. Hearing others success stories I think you can say Gigabyte is more then a viable option. However, I believe many will agree that ASUS, Epox and ABIT will have better o/c'ing options if that is what you are looking for. If not then I'm positive Gigabyte will suite you well.

Btw, (you may know) Gigabyte has dual bios, something you hope you'll never need, but still a hugh plus.
